notes

"We felt Rock 'n' Roll was dead. So we believed it our duty to revive it, bring it back to the people and return it to its original organic state."
Black Market Radio began as a collaborative effort between Peter Cornell
and Keith Mannino, who met in New York City in 2000. The pair quickly found
in each other kindred spirits who had a drive and focus to create music, so
they formed a partnership. Cornell, a Seattle native, came from a
grunge/folk background, having fronted the '90's band Inflatable Soule.
Mannino, a native New Yorker, has worked with many artists, including Lenny
Kravitz and the band Shadowbox. Combining their musical backgrounds and
styles, the duo locked themselves away bringing to life their interpretation of the way rock 'n' roll music should sound. The result, their self-titled debut record Black Market Radio.

"The record is honest, passionate, and fresh," Mannino says.
With enormous riffs, monster hooks and lyrics that actually have something to say, the duo created an original but truly rock sound.
Producing and engineering the project themselves, they have given life to a thought-provoking album of diverse rock songs that grab the listener and never let up.
The music ranges from passionately emotive ballads to fast-paced hard edge songs that will beat you so hard you will still hurt on Tuesday.
Mannino describes the record as "a reflection of the darkness,
turmoil, and sometimes complete bliss we were experiencing in our lives."
Driving rhythms and eclectic hooks cause the album to rise above the sea of
mediocrity of today's rock music.

Rounding out the band are recent additions John Hummel (drums) and Topher Mohr (guitar). Hummel has played with many bands and recently toured Europe. Mohr is an award winning instrumentalist and producer. He's also an accomplished songwriter and has played with various artists over the years.

In March 2006, the band played to a sold out crowd opening for Collective Soul.
This summers shows include headlining festivals for 95.1 WZZO
(Lehigh Valley’s Rock Station) and 93.3 WMMR(Philadelphia). BMR recently sold Don Hills in New York City and gave an electrifying performance at the Atlantic City House of Blues opening for Ill Nino.

“For us, mounting the stage is our hour to be warriors.” Cornell says. “We fight the good fight with passion, emotion, pain and sweat. Nothing is left under the lights.” The band is currently putting the finishing touches on their self-titled debut CD Black Market Radio, slated for release in June 2006.

  • This is what hard rock *should* sound like!
    author: Michael Penny

Great lyrics and riffs, and just a touch of real originality, make this album stand out from the general crowd of alternative metal/hard rock music. It draws on the '90s Seattle sound without sounding too imitative of any one artist or too backward-looking, and rewards repeated listening. The best debut album I've heard for a while.

  • Great Stuff--Inventive Hard Rock
    author: Dave F.

Really good stuff. Cornell's songwriting is as good, or better in some instances, than his more famous brother's. The record is dark, but has humor too, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Some cuts ARE reminiscent of old Soundgarden, but, dare I say, are more sophisticated in many ways than anything off of Ultramega Ok or Louder than Love. Cornell's voice is also very good, and only merely hints at the brotherly lineage; more like an homage rather than sounding note for note. I would bet that Peter has more versatility in his voice than does Chris at this time in their careers. Looking forward to the sophomore effort.

I was stoked about receiving this CD... I'm telling everybody about Black Market Radio around here. This band has a great sound that reminds me of Soundgarden with a Led Zeppelin mix.

  • Damn good Rock and Roll album
    author: David

BMR has its own unique sound that plays well in the 21st Century. The vocals remind you of Chris Cornell (I sure hope so since they look like brothers), but the guitars are past that early 1990 sound. Good hooks and overall song writing help make this a damn good Rock and Roll album.

REALLY GOOD CD,I CANT WAIT TO SEE THEM IN CONCERT

  • Soundtrack of my life right now
    author: Chris

The most retro thing about this band is their understanding of internet sales, hence I waited a few days while a plaid package made it's way from Portland to London. Well worth the wait. This record leaves self-indulgence at the door and lifts the listener up, instead of challenging them to a battle of wits or testing their patience. Performances are perfect. The song's the star. Cheese is applied sparingly and only after credible riffage. The lyrical hooks are the sort that make lyric writers wish they'd thought of them first. I won't call it a 'good thing' as an in-joke to my homies who've bought the record and I'll leave terms like 'blistering' to journalists with a cocaine hangover and 25 minutes to submit copy, but might go as far as 'Heavy, contolled and cool'. The band seems to be coming from a direction where we can all agree grunge is dead, but note that clever songwriting seemed to perish along with it. They'll need your support if their sort are to wrest the mantle of 'intelligent musicians' off 3-chord bedwetters like Coldplay, but buy this record for yourself. You won't regret it.

  • Simply Aesome

This CD is great, we definitely need more rock like this!

  • We need more of this, soon.

Really solid. Muscular. Black Market Radio reminds me of what music can be like and should be like. The future is bright after all.

  • If you like god music, buy this.
    author: Mike Keane

Like another who left a review for this cd, I bought it due to the Chris Cornell link. I was expecting a decent rock band with some catchy tunes. What I got was a band that does have a very strong Soundgarden sound, but who are an awful lot better than the decent band I was hoping for. There is an early Soundgarden vibe in their music and vocals ( No bad thing in my opinion), but they also have a freshness to their sound that lets them stand slightly apart from their influences. If, like me, you loved bands like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, and like well played and catchy music, then buy this album. There are scores of bands out there whose music gets into the charts, sell shedloads of cd's, but don't sound half as good as these guys.

  • MUST HAVE ROCK CD!!!
    author: Jay

this cd is great. i recommend this to everyone who will listen. it has a grunge feel but is far far more than that. i really hope these guys go big cause i would love to hear more music in the future. im glad i found out about them

This band and cd stand on their own merits, with or without the Soundgarden angle. True, the music hints at late-80s, early-90s Soundgarden, but it's got more texture and less bombast. This is solid, inspired songwriting with excellent lyrical content, and I can't wait to hear what they come up with next.

  • Great sound and vocals
    author: Allen

Like other reviewers, I was attracted to BMR due to being a big Soundgarden / Audioslave fan. The vocals are fantastic and the sound reminds me of Soundgarden. This is one CD that has been listened to... alot!

  • author: Jesse

I haven't been able to stop listening, it's awesome! The songs make you tap your foot. I bought it expecting that it would entertain me for a few days, but a month later, it's still going strong!

  • author: Lauren

Great CD. Good old-fashioned rocking tunes, delivered like they mean it!! We like. We like a lot!!

  • Surprisingly good, solid alternative rock.
    author: Gill Bates

First, lets put it on the table: Chris Cornell, the talented brother of Peter Cornell is the real reason I got interested in this CD in the first place. They do have some similarities in voice and style. But let me say I was pleasently surprised by this band. The present excellent music on par with many highly successful rock bands (even better than most of the crap they play these days). As with almost all of Chris' older band (soundgarden) albums, at first I didn't connect to the music but later I found out that I chose to play the CD over and over in my car. The songs have a hard edge, but are quite fun and catchy reminding me at times of Tool, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots. So if any of these bands are favourites for you, you've got to try this album.
