For the alternative band Black Lab, love lost and found is viewed through a cinematic lens. Like scenes from a movie, songwriter Paul Durham shoots every line like a heartbroken reel. He crafts his words with a poet’s eye, the scenes lit with the radiant light of his yearning, soaring voice.

In 1998, Black Lab was signed to Geffen Records and mesmerized modern-rock radio with the haunting singles “Wash It Away” and “Time Ago,” both Top-40 hits on alternative rock and pop formats. The group’s intelligent, heartfelt lyrics and wide-screen guitar attack had them compared to U2. Radio programmers hailed the band as the Next Big Thing.

Contributions to soundtracks followed as their moody, passionate vocals and sweeping guitars landed on the soundtracks of Can’t Hardly Wait, Varsity Blues, Permanent Midnight, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Unfortunately, on the cusp of world domination, their label went out of business, leaving the band’s dreams in disarray.

In 2002, Black Lab found themselves on the soundtrack of Spider-Man, opening another chapter for the band -- or at least for Durham, who produced the band's second album, See the Sun, with new guitarist Andy Ellis. Born and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, Durham was the mad scientist behind Black Lab from the beginning.

See the Sun represents Durham's relentless desire to produce the kind of record that'll wow listeners worldwide. Using the epic, incandescent riffs and dark yet emotionally uplifting vocals that hooked fans in the first place, See the Sun often spices rock-solid guitars with subtle layers of lush synthesizers, giving the tracks a contemporary yet timeless feel.

While See the Sun furthers develops the sonic landscape of Black Lab's debut, Your Body Above Me, the band continues to expand its sound into uncharted territory, contributing the wicked techno of "This Blood" to the score and soundtrack of the film Blade: Trinity, as well as music for television (MTV's Real World, What I Like About You, The Days) and the upcoming film Lovewrecked.

    My car CD player has refused to eject this album for the past 2 months, and I don't mind at all. It has exceptional listen-ability, and now I'm hooking all my friends. If you like good, harmonic, driven-mixed-with-ballady rock music, then sheesh, what are you waiting for?

    I thought Black Lab had sunk like a stone, but gave them a Search, and found this superb release. It's a grabber from the first listen. Less dark and more pop than their Geffen album, with huge hooks on every song and great production. Paul Durham's voice still has enough edge to balance even the sweetest chorus. Pure sonic pleasure!!

    I like this. Starts like a happy comercial for a new beetle. Turns into a convertible with California sunshine comming through. Goes quick through dark tunnels. Around the corner into bright light.

    This is one of the best CD's that I have bought in a long time. It is one of those CD's that you can put in and listen to all the way through and then listen again. If you liked "Keep Myself Awake" from the Can't Hardly Wait sountrack, you will love this CD.

    Better than 99% of everything on the radio. Black Lab has been a favorite of mine since the late 90s and this CD surpasses even my expectations. Don't hesitate, order this disc and thank me later...in fact, order a few-your friends and family will steal it when you are not looking. Oh yeah, it's that damn good. The opening two tracks grab your attention and suck you in...only to have the rest of the CD follow suit and demand to be played over and over.

    This album has been a long time coming for Black Lab fans. Every time we'd get our hopes up it would be pushed back, delayed or cancelled altogether. If you're not a Black Lab fan you will be after hearing this. The album is brilliant. Great songs, great production and a raw, honest vocal offered up to the world with battle scars in full view.
