notes
BLACKBIRDS came into being in late 2005 when Mike Slajchert joined with former student Claire Hellige to see what kind of musical stew could result from mixing a neophyte with a pristine voice with an old gravelly-voiced musical vet who has been involved in the Chicago music scene for three decades-plus. Claire eventually had to devote her time to school and work, and the distance from Chicago to St. Louis has made it impossible for that connection to continue. Enter Jasmine Quintana - dancer, model, student of the performing arts at DePaul - to add her incredible voice to the mix.
Some of our music appears on SOUNDAID, a place where musicians from around the world offer their tunes to help Heifer fight world hunger.
Whatever profits come from these ventures will go to fighting AIDS in Africa, especially through the work of Dr. Mardge Cohen from Chicago (you can read about her in the "news" section here). You can also catch us at benefit performances, mostly with Matt Scharpf (formerly of "Jamestown" and now a purveyor of original tunes on mygiftismysong.com - in case you want an original song for a wedding, anniversary, funeral (well, maybe not a funeral).

Excellent modern folk CD. Pick up a copy today!
author: Xavier P. and RadioIndy“Unlicensed” by the talented Blackbirds is a beautiful collection of modern-folk tracks! Don’t be deceived by this CD’s title – the Blackbirds are fully licensed in the field of creating folk songs that leave a lasting impression! The elegant vocals of both of Blackbirds’ singers mix to create stunning harmonies and duets, as demonstrated in “Loving Arms.” Inspiring lyrics of personal growth, strength, and love adds yet one more invaluable asset to this CD. What’s more, every track on this CD is graced with amazing instrumentation. Polished with careful production, this CD is the perfect creation for fans of Neil Young and Indigo Girls!
Poetic
author: Andre Seifert - Germany"Back to Where I've Never Been" This is country blues, I'd say - but in a soft manner that's more like folk and singer/songwriter-music. The voice reminds me a little of Neil Young. The harmonica that comes in around 2,09 also reminds me of Neil Young of course. The arrangement is beautiful, particularly the instrumental bridge before the voice comes in again around 3,00. Some great images like "the ghost I'm trying to be". Capures the feeling of being a lost soul. "Box full of sorrows" is also great. I like the lyrics of the last passage - "All my beginnings have unhappy endings..." may not be the most exotic sentiment for this type of music, but it's very poetic and well executed. A beautiful song for sad days.
Beautiful guitar and vocal
author: D Fitzsimmons"Only Love Survives" -beautiful guitar work -really lush vocal...singer really knows his range...and how to treat a great vocal line -I really like the lyrics in this...it's a social commentary, but more reflective than "protesty"...and I really like that approach. -Great instrumentation...really skilled players. I can't wait to hear more!
