Bird York's sensual, smoky vocals glide over a delicate weave of textured sounds and rolling groove.
-------------
Dark smoky vocals, intimate lyrics, haunting guitars and a rolling groove, singer songwriter, Bird York was voted "one of the top ten Emerging artists" by the music editors of Amazon.com. Her smoky voice and haunting melodies lead Music Biz magazine to coin the term "torch trip hop" when describing her music.
Her self titled debut cd includes collaborations with Grammy Award winning producer Larry Klein, (Madeleine Peyroux, Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin) and Grammy Award winning engineer mixer, Thom Russo, (Macy Gray, Juanez), and includes songs heard on Nip Tuck and CBS's Family Law. Musicians on this cd include Tori Amos' long time guitarist Steve Caton, Shawn Colvin producer/bassist Larry Klein, and Seal's keyboardist-programmer, Jamie Muhoberac.
Bird has worked as a vocalist and songwriter with the likes of Deep Forest, members of the acclaimed Scottish band, The Blue Nile, and was the featured vocalist on Peter Buffet's, Mammoth records release, "Sugarbaby".
Bird spent a season as the 'musical voice' for the critically lauded CBS drama Family Law. Her music has also been heard in director Dan Water's Newline feature "Happy Campers", the films "Shelter Island" and "Betrayed" and the television show Jake 2.0.
Doing double duty in film, Bird has gained popularity as liberal left upstart Andy Wyatt on NBC's Emmy Award winning drama, The West Wing.
Bird (Kathleen) York's acting credits include films with Tom Waits, Dianne Keaton, Julianna Margules and Dennis Hopper as well as the HBO hit "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and a recurring role on The O.C.

A lot has been said
author: Jacques BeaumierAnd a lot is true ! Sensitive and melodic, mooving with "retenue", sophisticated and rough... great recording too. Thank you CD Baby !
better than any drug!
author: pennyanmanI enjoyed the early version of Open Wider and the cut Bought A Gun in particular. This record sneaks up behind you, whispers in your ear, and you WILL OBEY!!! Once you hear it once, you'll be hooked for life.
Bird's first and shows all how talented she is
author: Edward BlackoffGlimpses of her considerable talent emerge in this 1st cd. Sets the listener up for no. #2 which takes us even higher. I'm a big fan.
Turn it on and play it all night long!
author: RickHer voice and the music move together like a pair of hot dancers in love.
Bird York is fantastic!
author: www.GreatIndieMusic.comGreat job on this cd. Keep up the good work!
Wonderful!
author: ScottThis is an infectious CD. And I mean that in a good way. Bird York is a true talent as this CD proves. I rarely review CD's but I just had to say something about this CD. A must for anyone's CD collection.
Rich and haunting, sometimes moody, but very pleasing.
author: FriscoI didn't know Bird York was a singer-songwriter, until I came across a cd cover on a music website. I only knew of her as an actress. But boy, I was pleasantly surprised by her own distinctive sound. It's very nice to hear something different, with feelings, emotion, passion with a haunting, but very pleasing and laid back atmosphere. Open Wider is very poetic in words and music and has a cinematic feel about it, just beautiful. I bought this, and her second album right after hearing the samples on this site.
Bought Velvet Hour, just had to get this...
author: Kevin T...and wasn't disappointed. I simply love Bird's voice and hope one day to have the opportunity of hearing it live.
hauntingly addictive
author: Simon GuinnThis is one of those cds that just keeps finding its way back into the hi-fi system. The lyrics are deep, thoughtful and soul searching. The music is a soul jazz at its finest. I challenge anyone to listen to this CD without being emotionally challenged. It's quite simply music at its finest. Buy and enjoy.
absolutely AMAZING
author: Nataliethis is just the "real" music that I needed. I love the fact that it is so honest and un-"produced" Couldn't be happier!!!
WOW!
author: SashaAfter having dicovered Bird York on the "Crash" soundtrack, I first bought Velvet Hour and now her first CD and I'm deeply impressed - again. She's absolutely unique and unusual. Being seriously addicted to Jazz, I can't but recommend her music to everyone who's looking for something abroad MOR, AOR or simply mainstream. I do not like comparisons at all, but Bird York sometimes reminds me of Annette Peacock - both of the are outstanding in means of composition and phrasing. I just love her music and hope she'll continue and that she's gonna find the time to perform live in Europe!
Hauntingly beautiful and addicting
author: Laura KayeA friend of mine turned me onto your music and I'm so grateful he did! The melodies, the lyrics, the production are all superb and I can't stop listening to it... You are a brilliantly talented musician and i look forward to more..
Laying the groundwork for a remarkable career.
author: ChrisAll the signs are here: smoky vocals, eloquent lyrics, uncluttered production. In particular, Bought A Gun is the most chilling song I've heard since God Is A Bullet.
No words enough
author: AlainAmazing what words can do. Bird's worst texts are the better than any lyrics I ever heard before. Buy 2, one to use and one to keep in your vault.
Incredible
author: GennFabulous music, awesome lyrics, an overwhelming experience that should not be missed.
Beautiful Amazing
author: Michael MangiaThis girl rivals all indie girls, if you like PJ Harvey you would love this girl too. She's raw yet unconfined and raw but very detailed in her songwriting. She moved me and I'm curious about her now...
absolutely enchanting
author: Dawn EdwardsHer voice is sexy, enchanting, draws you right in. I would buy all she has. All the songs on this cd are remarkable.
- author: CD Baby
one of the greatest pop albums ever.
Sultry
author: KathyI bought this cd on a whim, it now has a permanent fixture in my cd player. The music is rich in texture, giving out vibrations that bring you to life. It doesn't get any more perfect than this album
Fabulous
author: Peter ClarkI bought this on a flyer, and was pleasantly surprised to have it be one of the best artists I've run across in a year or so. I liked it son much I'm buying the new one, too.
Insanely appealing
author: JenniferI loved this cd - to the extent that when I moved out of one apartment I lost it - and am buying a brand new copy right now. The lyrics are amazingly in your face, while being subtle and poignant at the same time. It's great music by a great woman. She's a brilliant talent.
Simply Irresistable
author: ShaneThis CD takes the listener through Birds different emotions with poetic ease and bassy pulsing music. This is great music to listen to in the car and just while relaxing, but also works for close understanding and relating to the artist. A work of art!
Essence of the soul's very breath from the artisti's core.
author: Cecilia GrossmannRooted, Ms. York has a strong yet sensually beautiful voice. "Open Wider", a song on this cd took my mind away with the lyrics and overall sound.
GREAT! Absolutely STUNNING!
author: AlexBuy it! It's the best CD I heard in a long time. She's great!!
Send the stars flying
author: Tony W.when i first heard her stunning voice, i was thrown eight feet back. she is an uncanny resemblence to a little famous person, a la Fiona Apple. it's unbelieveable their likeness. and like Ms. Apple, Bird York is a grace with thorns and fires. Her lyrics are the thorns and her delivery are the fires. We need more artists like her to finally rid the scene of pop tweets and ditzs. Bring on the talent!
What a stroll through deep emotional windows into...
author: JoshewahWhat a stroll through deep emotional windows. Rarely does an artist open up these places to let us in. Bird carries her music along this highway of healing and does it in a way that is so intmate and subtle you never want it to end. Please hurry with more...

Heartfelt and full of life experience, Bird is an amazing recording. York has a wonderful voice, hopeful one moment, sad the next. It is a very rich recording, with multiple layers of instrumentation and vocals. At times you feel like you are in a dream directed by David Lynch. This is a wonderful CD. I recommend listening to it at night, in a dark room, with a good cabernet and many cigarettes.

It is an excellent album. "Bought a Gun", is a song of the times. The words are stunning and real. This is the first time I have heard this fine lady's talented voice, and she will be on my playlist with several songs from this album.
- author: Scott Barker/ Tuscon Lifestyle Magazine
.a commanding opus. York (has)...a poetic sensibility that is diamond sharp in it’s perceptions. Hook laden songs like “What Are You Running After” and “Open Wider” are deceptively complex. Her voice is compelling and a little exotic.
- author: Michael Wells/ Music Critic/amazon.com
York's sultry vocals and songwriting sensibility bring to mind Portishead and Everything But The Girl. As with those groups, she weds acoustic instrumentation with heavy rhythmic grooves.Lyrically, York tackles difficult subject matter, (a child's obsession with firearms in "Bought a Gun,"a runaway teenage girl's sexual awakening in "Open Wider"), with sensitivity and intelligence. Ultimately, Bird is exquisite--from the opening track to the lulling, emotionally abundant denouement of "Breathe Deeply."
- author: Michael Mollura/music Connection Magazin
York has a sultry voice that lathers up your imagination with sensitive material. ...her vocals offer unique dynamics and unpredictable melodic hooks. Lyrically, York holds court with captivating images.

"a wonderful new musical talent...her debut cd is gorgeous. She has a wonderful, deep, soulful voice and the arrangements are quite lush and beautiful."
