Bird Show of North America writes songs about birds. The songs are meant to take the listener on a little journey in the bird's life.
During the live show, a full-time member of the band paints each bird on stage.
After the show the paintings are sold to the crowd. It's a way for the audience to feel more connected to the live show and take a piece of it home with them.
The band began as a two-piece in Champaign, Illinois in 2000. Cj Miller plays drums and Ian Peters plays guitar. They were called Aluminum Duel.
In the spirit of bands such as Don Caballero and domakesaythink, they were trying to create a challenging listen playing furious live shows to gain the audience's attention.
They relocated to Seattle in 2001.
After taking a couple of years to get settled they decided to change their name and have a theme. A bird theme seemed like a fun idea. The ideas seemed endless. There are thousands of birds in the world and thousands of things the birds do.
They decided to add paintings to their live shows. Originally the thought was just to show a painting of a bird before each song. They were going to commission paintings from Curtis Poortinga, a friend of theirs. Then they had the idea to see if Curtis would paint on stage at every show. Curtis liked the idea and the rest is history. He is now an integral part of the band. They never perform without him.
As an instrumental band the addition of a painter makes the live show far more interesting. In a way he acts as the singer...the focal point of the show.
On the release, Murder Over Moscow, Ian plays second and third guitar parts as well as bass and keyboard. CJ played many percussion overdubs.
In the near future bass and second guitar may be added to their live show.
The vision for future live shows includes bird props and possibly bird footage played on a screen behind the band.
They also plan on putting on benefit shows for wildlife organizations such as the Audubon Society.

author: Liam BrennanGreat stuff! Great for listening to and transporting one's self while driving thru the Adirondacks in winter. I'm a casual birder, and it was fun trying to picture the birds with the musical interps. Love to see the band in action; hope y'all come to the metro NY area in '08.
