notes
“Malcolm Bilson demonstrates with an infectious enthusiasm that an understanding of and attention to the score can result in increased musical expressivity and excitement, allowing the music to have its full, radical impact.”
~ Stephen Hough, pianist
“By the sheer zest of his commitment to reappraising the way we play and hear the keyboard music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, Bilson has probably done more than anyone else toward shifting the lazy, anachronistic clichés to which perfomers often resort. His passion is an inspiration to us all!”
~ Sir John Eliot Gardiner, conductor
“So you think you know how to read music? Malcolm Bilson’s delightful presentation covers the subtle interconnections and confusions among composers’ intentions, musical notation, intellect, instinct, spontaneity, expression, and meaning in musical performance. It will almost certainly set you to re-thinking much of what you thought you knew.”
~ Neal Zaslaw, editor, The New Köchel
In this innovative DVD, Malcolm Bilson questions many of the basic concepts of musical performance taught in conservatories and music schools around the world. He also clearly demonstrates that an insightful reading of the older notations will lead to more expressive and passionate performances. Every bit as awesome as I expected it to be.
author: Pieter LouwMalcolm is an excellent scholar, performer and teacher. The subject matter was most illuminating and all the effort that went into illustrating and backing up everything he says is sorely appreciated. The talk afterwards gave me an insight that I cannot imagine having aquired otherwise. Hope there is more of same to follow shortly. Bravo Bilson!!
Malcolm Bilson is a joy!
author: Paul SheftelMalcolm Bilson is a joy. He is a superb musician, a profound thinker and scholar and a compelling and delightfully engaging speaker. His recordings of the Mozart Sonatas are breathtaking and hearing his insighful remarks on understanding and correctly reading the score is a bracing and thought provoking experience.
