In Bill Hunter Project's, Prosthetic Muse, smart songwriting plus superb musicianship from some of San Francisco Bay Area's best jazz and blues artists create a musical oasis where even the most jaded or discerning of travelers will find hours of refreshment. The song list, grounded in blues and blues-tinged ballads, includes some gorgeous improvised horn, piano and guitar solos. A few of the songs draw from other traditions, such as soca and gospel. All tracks on this stunning debut release are unified by the compelling, sometimes spellbinding, lyrics of songwriter Bill Hunter.
Bill Hunter, San Francisco Bay Area songwriter and vocalist, wrote all of the songs on the Prosthetic Muse CD. Founder of Round Park Records, he is currently promoting the Sing For Peace Project. Bios for other key musicians attest to the depth of talent and experience featured on this CD:
John "Buddy" Conner, a native of Berkeley, has a powerful voice with evident roots in gospel, blues, R&B and jazz. In the 1980s, he was featured vocalist for the legendary Earl "Fatha" Hines orchestra and later performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, plus other stops on the California festival circuit. Buddy has performed and recorded with Jimmy Witherspoon, Wilton Felder, Pharaoh Sanders, and John Handy. Handy says: "Buddy is an extraordinary talent, an intelligent and sensitive singer who can croon, scream, scat, moan, beg. You name it, Buddy can do it." Along the way, he's garnered three Gold Awards for Outstanding Male Jazz & Blues Vocalist.
Faye Carol, vocalist. Faye's musical career started in the mid-1960's as a vocalist in Bay Area R&B and funk bands. In the 1970s, she formed The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol and Her Trio, performing in jazz and cabaret venues. In 1997, Faye and her daughter, pianist Kito Gamble, released The Flow, featuring drummer Billy Higgins. Phillip Elwood, music critic for the San Francisco Examiner, wrote: "No singer in the Bay Area comes close to Carol's sheer intensity. - She doesn't just sell a song . . .she sells her soul for that song."
Danny Caron, Guitar - Danny is probably best known as the musical director and guitarist for legendary pianist/singer Charles Brown, an association that lasted from 1987 until Mr. Brown's death in 1999. But this talented blues and jazz player also has performed and recorded with many other notable artists, such as Bonnie Raitt, Ruth Brown, Marcia Ball, Etta Jones, Van Morrison and John Lee Hooker.
Paul Nagel, Pianist - Paul Nagel has three decades of experience as jazz and blues pianist. He recently released, with drummer Jason Lewis and bassist John Shifflett, a CD of jazz compositions by the trio entitled NLS. He has played with instrumentalists including Robben Ford, Ray Drummond, Eddy Marshall, Harvey Wainapel and Anton Schwartz and vocalists Bobby McFerrin, Kitty Margolis and Madeline Eastman. John Shifflett, Bass - John Shifflett has performed with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Red Holloway, Ernie Watts, John Zorn, Kim Richmond, Kurt Elling, Norma Winstone, Tom Harrell, Bobby Hutcherson, Scott Hamilton, Harold Land, Esther Blue, Clarence Bell, and others. In the Bay Area he can be heard with Smith Dobson, Dick Hindman, Harvey Wainapel, the Paul Nagel Trio, the Will Bernard Quartet (and CD), the Peter Apfelbaum Sextet (and CD), Ann Dyer & No Good Time Fairies (and CD), Ray Brown's Great Big Band, Daniel Zinn (and CD), Tim Volpicella (and CD), and many others.
Jason Lewis, Drums. Mr.Lewis has also performed with the San Jose Symphony and the San Jose Civic Light Opera.
