notes

Bill Grundy was a professional musician in his early years but gave it up for a business career. After retirement he took up the clarinet again to fulfill a lifelong love for the music of the swing era. He brought together a group of highly respected musicians who shared his love for the music and " In a Sentimental Mood ", was recorded. It is smooth jazz, reviving memories of songs of the swing era. It is nostalgia for many, a surprising new experience for others.

Bill has a rich clarinet sound reminiscent of a Benny Goodman and plays with great sensitivity. His melodic sense together with the impelling rhythm of swing makes for very enjoyable listening.

Charlie Austin, piano, Bobby Cairns, guitar, John Taylor, bass and Brian Thurgood, drums, not only provide solid rhythm, but each contributes solos that are in the true swing style of the 30's and 40's but with a modern touch. Each of them have played professionally with internationally renowned groups such as Tommy Banks and P.J.Perry and others too numerous to mention here. They also have been department heads in the highly regarded jazz program at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Alberta for many years. Bill will tell you that it has been wonderfully satisfying for him to have played with such a talented group of highly professional musicians.

This CD makes a great gift for parents and friends.

  • IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD

A rare find! The movie "Rocketeer" included a scene in a 1940's club which started with "Seniemental Mood" played with a lead clarinet; can't be found, not even on the movie CD, but great. Grundy's version is as good, or better. "Body and Soul" is also as good as it gets!

  • A fantastic rendition of cool 40's swing!

The smooth clarinet of Grundy combined with great renditions from the other artists make this an outstanding collection of swing classics from the 30's and 40's. A must have for those of us who treasure the music of that era!
