notes

BILL GARVIN is an accomplished guitar player, singer, composer and arranger who specializes in a sophisticated blend of jazz and blues. He is also a rare and endangered species, a full-time musician. Bill makes his entire living playing music, not just for fun while supporting himself as an insurance salesman or plumber. He played his first professional (paid) gig at age 10, and was inspired in part by his father, who used to play cowboy swing music on the radio.

Bill is known as ARG (the Amazing Rock God) by many of his fans because of the way he plays familiar classic rock and blues tunes. He enjoyed some national success with the Larry Keyes Band, having a #3 indie hit and playing the same venues as Poco and the Charlie Daniels band. He has toured extensively, both in bands and as a solo artist, and has played everywhere from smoky honkytonks to huge festivals.

His first CD, “Jacob’s Girl”, has sold quite well locally, and his second release, “Trebizon”, is now available. Ten cents from the sale of every "Trebizon" CD will go to feed homeless puppies. So if you don't buy a CD, those poor puppies will starve. What kind of person would let that happen? (kidding!)

Bill Garvin resides in Apache Junction, Arizona and appears at many local venues on a regular basis, as well as festivals and concerts throughout the state. He is also something of a humorist, and his monthly newsletter is popular with hundreds.

What's this CD like? Like expensive cognac, it's smooth, spicy, and intoxicating. Here's some brief information about each of the tracks:

1. Spooky
An instrumental re-make of an old favorite. The beat has been updated, a few chords added, and the bass line changed completely. The electric guitar parts resemble Stevie Ray Vaughn and Robben Ford.

2. Thank You
An acoustic guitar instrumental version of the song by Dido. The arrangement is changed, but the overall feel stays pretty true to the orginal

3. Old Elias
A mostly true story, this original tune was inspired by the songwriting of Kelly Joe Phelps and Shawn Colvin. The slide guitar parts are done on my dad's old 1930's Supertone.

4. Trebizon
Original acoustic guitar smooth jazz. Somehow reminded me of an ancient walled city on the Spice Road, like Trebizon in Turkey.

5. Ain't No Sunshine
Recorded years ago on an actual analog reel-to-reel machine, and released on some homemade CDs. Re-mastered here.

6. The Question
Straight ahead blues tune, again channeling Robben Ford. Took me five minutes to write (Old Elias took six months).

7. Broken Wings
A staple of my live performances, an acoustic gutar instrumental version of a song some of you may hate by now, but a lot of us still love.

8. I Heard It Through The Grapevine
A Larry Carlton-inspired version of a classic tune, with a more modern feel.

9. Elianne
Electric guitar jazz and rock fusion, similar to Joe Satriani and Jeff Beck. Another live performance staple.

10. Higher Ground
Stevie Wonder's tune slowed down a bit so it grooves, with big, bad blues guitar taking the place of Stevie's voice.

Enjoy!

The selection of music is varied and extremely well done. The CD is fast becoming one of my favorites, especially Trebizon, which is just way cool. It's almost magical as when I close my eyes and listen to this song, it transports me onto the back of a white dancing stallion which glides effortlessly under by body, floating, twirling and then ever so gently allowing me to return to solid ground.
