BIG DADDY 'O'
Deranged Covers
That's How Strong My Love Is
Rabadash
"Deranged Covers" is a strange title for a Blues album, considering that the whole tradition is based on recycling and reworking. The 'deranged' part of the title is the clue, as Big Daddy 'O' (Owen Tuft) has reworked his raw material to produce a strikingly varied and yet assuredly authentic sounding album. The range of styles on display is remarkable, and casts Big Daddy 'O' as a ‘renaissance man’ of Taj Mahal proportions, an eclecticism which makes for a genuinely refreshing listen. The instrumentation, including violin, mandolin, trumpet, B-3 organ etc., contributes to the whole 'deranging' process. Chester 'Howlin' Wolf' Burnett's 'Built For Comfort', for instance, sounds radically different to the original, which is exactly the approach any contemporary interpreter of the Blues canon should take. "That's How Strong My Love Is" is a much more intimate, traditionalist album of cosy acoustic Blues. Owen's homely baritone voice is backed on most tracks by a pared-down set-up of acoustic guitar and one or two other instruments, including a wonderfully lyrical accordion on the title track, and effortlessly debonair jazz trumpet stylings on 'I Don't Drink Much'. Of the two albums, I marginally prefer "That's How Strong My Love Is" on the basis that Big Daddy O's heart is clearly in laid-back, down-home country Blues, of which the album is a superlative slice.

Cool, Daddy "O"!!!
author: Libby :-)The tunes on this CD are covers, but they're far from generic and far from the commonly done covers. I have this CD in my 10 disc changer and listen to it several times a week!

This c.d. is better then the first! The first was pretty good but I love the electric guitar in it. Way to go Mr. Hutson and Big Daddy O!!!
Classical Simplicity
author: JohnThis CD is more than just blues, it is like a gumbo of sounds and styles that never grow old. Just try to name another Blues CD with both violin and mandolin. I had heard many of these songs before, by other artists, but hearing Big Daddy O derange them is like hearing a new song for the first time. Even if you're not a blues fan, you owe it to yourself to check out this CD for its honest, heartfelt sincerity.
Great music
author: MichaelThis cd flows with a nice mellow tone throughout the songs. The guitar arrangements work well and the wide variety of instruments used sounds great. He has a perfect voice for the blues and the cd is good for just relaxing. Excellent music.

Awesome!
author: KristianAwesome, unique and one-of-a-kind. Perfect for relaxing on a front porch with long-island ice teas. 4 Stars!
You will smile.Your feet will tap. Chills will be felt in your spine!
author: Dancing BearThe number & quality of musicians that play on this CD tells it all! Who doesn't want to play with Big Daddy O is the real question? He has a voice like soft butter and plays with his heart more than his fingers. Add honey to that butter when Cherie Mannino's voice chimes in. Hutson Brock's magical fingerwork brings up the heat. Mike Pace & Theresa Andersson both on violin add both taste & sweetness to the mix. Milo Mannino, Tim Ernest & Wessley Rhodes wail on the horns & harp to simply blow the lid off! Jerry Crowell mixes in a surprising dash of Mandolin. Add another near dozen first class musicians for spice and it all begins to taste and feel just right!! You WILL want a second helping!! I do right now!!
FAB
author: SharonVery, very enjoyable! Hard to take it out of the drive! So, to solve that issue, I just keep on playin' it.
