notes

Shelly Bhushan knows how to push the goose bump button: that little spot on the back of your head that makes your hair stand on end and sends a tingle down your arms; the spot that makes you smile with a lump in your throat; the spot that makes you blink twice and whisper "Wow!" When she wraps her smooth, warm alto around a lyric and leans into the mike to deliver her soulful message to an enthusiastic crowd, you can feel the electricity in the air. Bhushan has power to spare, but it's the song that comes first and her ability to hold back creates the tension that is the mark of all great singers.

Bhushan's skills as a singer, songwriter and arranger are showcased on The Shelly Show, recorded live in the studio and produced by Bhushan and drummer/percussionist John Celentano. The mini-album only has four tracks, but their range and diversity show a restless creativity that's not easily contained by neat categories. "Goodtime" is a gritty bit of Memphis funk accented by Ben Hoffstein's churchy organ and Bhushan's multi-tracked backing vocals. "Run" is a mournful ballad that showcases Bhushan's knack for delivering a big emotional statement. "Taken" explores the complex sentiments stirred up when the object of desire is already involved in another relationship. Bhushan's vocal here is delicately balanced between love and anger, hope and despair. "Too Hard To Fall" wraps things up with an emotional ode to lost love accented by Julia Kent's swooning cello. Underlying every tune is Bhushan's soulful delivery, the sanctified keyboard work of Ben Hoffstein and John Celentano's sympathetic rhythm tracks. Lyrically Bhushan's able to capture those everyday moments of happiness and grief and spin them into deeply moving vignettes that will bring nods of recognition from anyone who's ever been in or out of love.

Bhushan has been able to build a considerable buzz by word of mouth. With no agent and no hype she's managed to turn heads and win new fans with every gig. Bhushan and her band will tear the roof off your venue; in a few years you'll be telling people you knew her before she was a star!

I am not a reviewer just a music lover. This CD is the sh*t. I bought 4 to give away for the holiday's as presents. Don't listen to reviewers who know nothing listen to this CD and decide for yourself. It is still a free country isn't it? Make up your own mind, reviewers know nothing they have small closed minds! LOL

  • wish it were longer

These songs are well written and show of her creative skills nicely. It's obvious to me that Shelly Bhushan is a talented woman. This is a nice little recording. Small in quantity (only 4 songs), but large in presence.

  • A persuasive and powerful vocalist !

Shelly's style has been described as "Aretha Franklin meets Bonnie Raitt." Bhushan has a silky, alto voice and her delivery is controlled yet soulful. Shelly is backed by seasoned players on her diverse, four track EP. The CD opens with 'Goodtime' a Memphis funk based tune enhanced by Shelly's multi-tracked vocals. 'Run' is an expressive ballad as the instrumentation and vocals subtly ebb and flow. 'Taken' explores a variety of moods and tones ranging from anger to hope. 'Too Hard to Fall' is a eulogy to lost love sung with passion and enhanced by a cello. The Shelly Show explores the blues, rock and soul through diverse and dramatic arrangements and Shelly Bhushan is a persuasive and powerful vocalist!

  • Shelly Bhushan is soulful and strong woman with the voice and talent to match.

Shelly Bhushan is a soulful and strong woman with the voice and talent to match. This CD has five brilliant songs and is a perfect showcase for The Shelly Show. “Good Time” is one of the best new songs I’ve heard all year. An excellent impulse buy.

  • Powerful, yearning, and a little naughty

LOVE IT. The Shelly Show is powerful enough to knock you back, with a great groove that communicates the artist's yearning. I only wish the EP had more tracks. I'll be looking for more from the Shelly Show!

  • A voice like hers cannot be described in words.

Shelly Bhushan rocks! I don't normally like "chick music" and I was blown away by this CD. It's only 4 songs, but Shelly has a lot more where that came from. Her songwriting has such a blend of styles that it's always interesting to hear what she comes up with next. If you're ever in NYC you must see her perform live. A voice like hers cannot be described in words. She is truly amazing, and her band is great, too; as Prince is fond of saying, "This is real music played by real musicians".

  • The only things missing on this album are more songs.
    author: Mark

If you’ve never had the pleasure of hearing Shelly sing live, no worries. Her debut EP captures the same energy and passion she puts into her live shows. The sultry sounds and funky beats on The Shelly Show take you on a rollercoaster ride of Rock n Soul stories. For me, the only things missing on this album are more songs to get lost in. Will I be anxiously awaiting a full-length effort from this truly amazing and talented artist? Heck yes! Vote for Shelly…
