The Blues for the Cure™ story
"In September of 1999 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Immediately I was launched into an inescapable nightmare, which included lumpectomies, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, shunts, anti-nausea medication, and baldness. My name is Sally Katen, and I am a survivor.
For me, the courage to endure the dreadful side effects of the treatments came in the form of not only personal strength, but also the unwavering and extraordinary show of support from family and friends. Each and every one of them has been instrumental to my healing process. Throughout this journey, I am transforming from a frightened cancer victim to a survivor enlisted in the discovery of a cure.
Blues for the Cure™ was born from my humbling experience with breast cancer. It culminated from a warm wish from a dear friend, Marina Texeira of the Torch Club who said, “When you feel better, we need to have a benefit.” At the conclusion of my treatments, in the Fall of 2000, just as brand new hair began to sprout from my baldness, The Torch Club hosted the first blues benefit to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The enormous generosity bestowed by each of the band members who donate their precious time, energy, and melodic talents makes this event possible.
With a little help from my friends, my breast cancer has been in remission for 5 ½ years."
