notes

Better Late gets it's name from the old saying "better late than never". It's funny, time really does fly by, whether we are having fun or not!

For each of us life brings many opportunities as we move ahead, but for me, creating and producing my original music was one thing I always wanted to do. Sometimes the key is to wait until things line up!

I built a studio addition on my house, moved in and started working on what would become "Better Late, New World". A little late to be sure, but New World seems to have been worth the wait!

The 9 tunes on the New World CD are all original. I play guitars and guitar synth, Glenway Fripp plays keyboards and bass. Guest drummers include Jean-Luc Imbert, Jack Shanahan and Costas Apostolos. Max Fripp makes a guest appearance playing percussion on "True Story". Jean-Luc Imbert also plays french horn on "Layer".

All of the tunes have a different personality, somehow defying genre or comparison and tie together very well as a whole. Listen to some of the samples and hear for yourself!

  • Rich musical "Layers" satisfies on every level
    author: Joshua Shapiro

Better Late works magic in funky, spacious, latin, ballad, and a few grooves hard to characterize. Just about all the tuneful, rhythmic compositions connect. Everywhere John Joy's tasteful and virtuostic guitar work shines. The opening cut "Layer" is cool and sophisticated. The rich, funky "Sweet" satisfies and soothes. The latin grooved "Relax" features gorgeous nylon and distorted guitars trading solos (and is way too intense to "relax" to). "True Story" hypnotizes as a sax-like synth melody floats above congas. A great unsung jazz group!

  • Nicely done.

High quality smooth listening with some commendable guitar work. Very enjoyable.

  • Great easy listening

I really enjoyed this CD. Track 4 (Title track) was particularly well done! I look forward to more from 'Better Late'!

  • Promising debut CD release of high-class smooth jazz!
    author: Johan Karlsson, Sweden

A very promising debut CD release of high-class smooth jazz! The several guitar-oriented tracks are especially enjoyable, performed with a tasteful mix of various genres on top of a genuine jazz foundation. 'looking forward to the next CD from Better Late - or better yet, perhaps a live appearance in Sweden?!
