notes

Beth Wood is a modern-day troubador, barefoot singer, award-winning songwriter, powerful vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, shameless harmonizer, poet, and communicator of joy.

Beth grew up in Lubbock, TX, where she was classically trained in piano, violin, harp and voice. After spending two years studying voice and piano at Brevard College in North Carolina, Beth moved on to The University of Texas, where she picked up a degree in Literature and her first guitar. While teaching herself guitar, she joined a band and became part of the Austin music scene. After a few years of playing around Austin in her band, and then in a duo, Beth kissed her day-job goodbye and returned to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina to pursue music full-time. The natural beauty of her surroundings provided inspiration while the supportive community helped Beth to become a standout in the Asheville songwriters’ community. Now an established singer/songwriter, she resides in Arlington, Texas while continuously touring to support her seven independent releases.

Beth also loves sports, and one of her weird hobbies is performing the National Anthem. She has done so at several major sporting events, including Texas Rangers Major League Baseball (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), Dallas Mavericks NBA Basketball (2004), and several minor league baseball and hockey events.

Beth says… "I feel blessed to have the opportunity to make music for a living! I want to continue making music I believe in, and to continue spreading the word about independent music. For me this journey is not just about the music - it's about the connections we make through music and recognizing the importance of art throughout our lives."

  • All talent- no hype

I love this CD. There is no better song than Late Night Radio when you are headed down the road in your 92 Honda Civic with your 5 year old stray mutt in the back. Undoubtedly, it is Petunia's favorite. Dad's Flannel brought a tear to my eye since I only lost him this past May. It's hauntingly beautiful. I would like Hero's Almanac more if it were not stuck in my head. Supermodel made me grin and go get a Woolloomooloo bar. There really are no bad tracks. I will listen to this CD often for years to come.

  • It's about time!

Although I own all of Beth Wood's CDs, I first got into her music after seeing her perform live. I've seen her live three times, and I also have the live album that she made with Jupiter Coyote, Wooden Coyote. Her CDs are great, but her live performances are nothing less than sublime. I was thrilled to hear that she was putting out an acoustic album, and I was downright ecstatic when she promised that "Supermodel" would be on it. The album really loved up to my expectations, and I hope to see another acoustic album from Beth Wood some day soon.

  • An interactive album - very unique idea

Having lived away from Asheville for almost four years now, I hadn't been aware that Beth was taking "votes" or "requests" for her upcoming acoustic/live CD. When I read the track list, it was rather astonishing but easy to believe that most of the songs I would have picked were on the CD! When somebody writes and plays songs as well as Beth, it's hard to say that any of the songs are better than the others - they all are excellent. But there are some of her songs that are "so Beth" that I really can't think of any other way to describe them - from Geometry to Deliciously, all the great tracks from Late Night Radio and a few that I've never heard Beth perform live. The only thing that I find to be disappointing about the CD is that I missed a live, guitar performance of one of my favorite songs by Beth: Fingernail Moon. Music like Beth's is one of the most prominent reasons I'm longing to return to Asheville.... It was also a nice surprise to have received my CD three days after I ordered it - receiving a CD in less than seven days is rare. Rock on CD Baby! AZ

  • Just like live: It's how Beth's music should be enjoyed!

I have been a fan of hers since listening to her play live in college at various small coffee houses in Austin, Texas. (She is responsible for my coffee addiction!) This album takes me back to those days and the pureness of her voice and playing. This is how Beth's music should be enjoyed, that is, if you can't get out and see her live. There wasn't room for all my favorites, but this is a great cross-section of her work. I would have to recomend this over her other albums.

  • Almost as good as live...

With the exception of "Homer" all my favorites are on here. This is like having Beth live right at my desk. Well maybe not... but close.

  • An acoustic collection of Beth's best songs.
    author: J. Kevin Wells

'You Take The Wheel' is the perfect alternative to a Greatest Hits album. It is a collection of songs, mainly from Beth's previous four albums, performed solo with only her acoustic guitar (and once with an electric piano.) Most of the songs were hand-picked by her fans, with a couple that Beth performs in her live shows, but never previously recorded, thrown in for good measure. Most of the songs were recorded in a studio, but some where recorded live on stage. The quality of the sound and the performances are indistinguishable between the two types of tracks, and you may not know you're listening to a live track until the audience applauds at the end of the song. The performances are soulful, warm, and personal. With the music reduced to one acoustic instrument, it is even easier to appreciate Beth's pure voice, and the elegance of her lyrics. While I appreciate the wonderful musicians, and the varied styles Beth usually employs for her albums, 'You Take The Wheel' is probably the closest I'll ever get to Beth performing for me in my own living room, so this album will definitely be returning to my CD player often. If you have never bought or heard a Beth Wood CD, however, this is not the place to start. While it's very easy to enjoy these songs on their own, they may not hold the same meaning for you if you haven't heard the original renditions. You should probably start with 'New Blood' or 'Late Night Radio'. But if you have heard and enjoyed any of Beth's work in the past, this album is essential for your CD collection.
