I think this guy needs an award, just for having the ability to portray through the means of music, a very intricate, visual, brief but intense experience with Salvia.... my herb of choice, and i think now this is the music of my choice to accompany!! Thanks Bernie, keep them screamin! MP

  • Blew my mind!

It's hard to say anything more than what is already here. I can't stop listening to it. If it were a vinyl record it would be completely trashed by now but I'd still be playing it, scratched and all. It is flawless, fresh, unexpected at every turn and yet you feel like the music has been a part of soul forever. Buy this CD!!! Don't think about it, just do it.

  • A musical mystical poet is born
    author: wayneweaver

Bernard Bernard will be your shamanistic guide on an autobiographical head trip through his brilliant debut disc. Each of these nine songs is like a psychedelic comic book, a well-drawn cryptic journal entry that provides direct access to an experience. It's sort of like if a calm-voiced Captain Beefheart was on a train, breathing the restless rhythmic smoke of Harmonia, Eno, and The Can, stoned in the dining car, on his way to a prismatic recollection of the future. This is original and highly recommended.

  • one of the rare, original, beautiful albums that will ever be made -- ever
author: Wrong Notes - the music blog of the Ear Reverends

Bernard Bernard's In The Land Of Giants Air Is Flesh is an album that is equally very accessible and very mysterious, by which I mean you can listen to it once and get totally into it and want everyone to hear it; and you can listen to it over and over again and still find yourself fascinated with it sonically and lyrically and want everyone to hear it. Thinking about the album in terms of its mysterious sonic qualities, I might be tempted to compare it to Brian Eno's Another Green World and other early albums. But, I'd also want to point out that there is an earthy quality to the Bernard Bernard album that I'm at a loss for words to call, other than the funk -- with which I might compare Bernard's album to a 21st century Funkadelic re-imagining their psychedelic masterpiece Maggot Brain. So, let me make that clear: imagine Another Green World meets Maggot Brain. Wow! So, taking the Maggot Brain reference one step further, Bernard's album has a subtle humor, good feeling, and subversive-freaky-friend groove to it. This is maybe the first thing that will hook you on it, if it's not a catchy lyric or two that you'll immediately find yourself humming. But, there are, at the same time, deep piles of interesting musical and lyrical fabric that you will want to explore with each subsequent listen. Sometimes I'm following weaves that seems to have been left by Moondog's original Theme; sometimes I'm feeling textures imprinted by Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation; sometimes I'm living in the scenes that appear on patches cut out of Tom Waits' Rain Dogs -- there is a lot to be found in there! And, this is where I come to again and again: at the same time, In The Land Of Giants Air Is Flesh is not really like any of these things. It's an original -- one of the rare, original, beautiful albums that will ever be made -- ever.

  • Fresh, rockin' psychodelia from Bernard Bernard
    author: Joe Fuchs

This album showcases the genius of Bernard Bernard, and his miriad of influences, musical and otherwise in a clear, concise, musical, beautiful way. Godspy could be the next big hit and change radio from catering to the pre-teen in the throes of confusion and adolescence, to catering to the teen/adult with a brain and a sense of soul. The album flows really nicely, with songs and instrumentals blending seamlessly in a delicious stew. The songs are not too long, not too short, like Goldilox's porridge - JUST RIGHT! Buy this album and realize that Sally is divine.

With this release, Bernard Bernard gives us a full unfolding of the talent we all detected in his tenure with Anus. Switched on with the assistance of her divine highness Salvia Regina, the Big Guy is speaking to us from another dimension, which really just ends up being his natural state of mind, the way it's always been for him since, like, forever. We begin in the warm hopping embrace of "God Spy," an anthem of transcendence, and proceed through the confectionary airiness of "Big Piece Of Candy" on into the mushroom crawl and psychedelic sprawl of "Life Giving Message," a pinnacle coupling of Yin and Yang (and don't miss the super cool background vocals by R2D2!), which rolls ever so easily into "Salvia Roads," a long tongue of a thing, busy licking a multitude of toads, aboard some kind of sea craft, amid a swirly blackness, totally free from harm, in the embrace of the beloved Shakti (its plainness moves me more than eloquence, to quote Shakespeare in a CD review). That opening sequence makes way for the stately ballad "The Taj," a romantic dreamscape awash in missed connections and unrequited fantasy, a real heartthrob gooey treat. The collection reaches its spiritual center with the audio verite masterpiece "How Much Can Happen In A Few Minutes, " a documentary epic of the virgin journey, and which contains the album's thesis: "I'm about to see that someone else saw me do this?" "Timtom, Carlisle, & Pilgrim" is the journey back down the mountainside, reunion with the body, a synthesized identity for your inner cowboy, sitting by the campfire, wishing he had a home, passing the time with some distant friends. By the time we get to "Filthy" we are earthbound and beholden to desire and the resulting karmic emptiness. Full integration comes in "Box," B2's elegiac autobiogaphical meditation on the blisses and banes of his youth, evoking his childhood identity ("Butch Katz") and leaving us at the end with the sweetest Oedipal mystery. Bernard Bernard gives us much to munch on. Dig it. He has arrived.

I love this album! I think I was the happiest person alive when I first got this cd in my hands! It's magnificent. His use of distinctive sounds to make up beautiful melodies that make you want to dance and cry are just enchanting. He lets us into his world, if only for a few minutes, we are inside this wonderful, unique, intelligent, magical and interesting mind. You will not want to return, beleive me! This is a cd that just makes you want to tell the artist: "Thank you! Thank you for making music"

A hot, rich, vibrant, soulful, genius, vulnerable, immediate musical masterpiece, Bernard Bernard: In The Land Of Giants Air Is Flesh - is one of the best pieces of art that my ears have been blessed with in a long, long LONG time. This album is unlike anything I have ever heard. It rocks my socks off, and I already know most of the words. All the songs blend perfectly even though they are so different. When is your next album coming out? I love your music!

  • An amazing, transcendental, melodic and rhythmic journey
    author: Chaney

In The Land Of Giants Air Is Flesh captures the core of the most beautiful kind of free-flowing beats, rhymes, melodies and rhythms. God Spy and A Big Piece of Candy lead me right into the dragon's layer of some of the best music I have ever encountered; an amazing, transcendental, melodic and rhythmic journey beyond classification. It makes you think, it makes you feel and it makes you JUST BE - which is best of all.

  • All I can say is wow...
    author: pennyroyal

This is one of my favorite CDs of the year. Bernard Bernard is a master alchemist of melodies and rhythms. I first heard the track God Spy and was totally hooked on its killer groove. It's an eclectic album unlike any other, filled with sonic textures (Big Piece of Candy, Timtom), wicked beats (Filthy, Box) and lovely musings (The Taj). A really beautiful collage of sounds that gets better with every listening. I love it!!!
