JEFF BERKLEY
The son of a traveling evangelist, Jeff Berkley grew up in Southern California, playing drums in alternative rock bands. After high school, he discovered the African djembe, which he combined with cymbals to create a bare-handed style of percussion that is uniquely his own. Before long, he was playing regularly in San Diego coffee houses and clubs with the likes of Jewel, Steve Poltz and The Rugburns, and Gregory Page; as well as entertaining thousands alongside folk circuit fixtures like Joel Rafael, Tom Prasada-Rao, Johnsmith and Don Conoscenti. All the while, however, he was playing guitar and writing his own music; and in 1998 he came out from behind his drum to perform his songs in a band which included fellow singer/songwriters Dani Carroll, John Katchur, and future partner Calman Hart. In the spring of 1999, Berkley won the prestigious New Folk Songwriter Competition in Kerrville Texas, past winners of which include Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, Jerry Jeff Walker, Hal Ketchum and Nancy Griffith. Not long after, Berkley officially teamed up with Hart, and the duo Berkley Hart was born.
CALMAN HART
Calman Hart was born at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Woods Cross City Utah on Christmas Eve. He began playing guitar and writing songs while still in high school, and worked through college playing in clubs across Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho, before finally putting down roots in San Diego. There, in 1992, his first album "Red-Eyed & Blue" won him the Best New Artist honors at the San Diego Music Awards. His second album "Train in the Distance", recorded with Bil Vorndick (producer of Alison Krauss' grammy-winning "I've Got that Old Feeling") and Nashville greats Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, David Grier and Roy Husky Jr., also met with critical success. In the mid-nineties, he fell in with the emerging San Diego coffee house scene, making the rounds with artists such as Jewel, Steve Poltz, Gregory Page, Dave Howard and John Katchur. It was during this time that he met percussionist Jeff Berkley, whose djembe made a prominent appearance on Hart's third album "The John Boy Drum" in 1998. One of the first to coax Berkley into the spotlight as a singer/songwriter, Hart soon began gigging regularly with him. While writing together in the summer of 1999, the seeds for "Wreck N' Sow" were planted, and the two officially joined forces as Berkley Hart.

Love, love, love this album. My favorites are HighSchool Town and Barrel of Rain. My kids love Wake up Charlie. My only complaint is that they don't come to Susanville enough. :)
these guys blend like peanut butter and jelly
author: eddie cunninghami love these guys and the world will love them too, as soon as i tell everybody...a match made in heaven..i can't ever get enough of these cats and i will catch them whenever possible...they are best in a intimate setting..but can rock it up a bit too! i see a grammy in the future, for jeff and calman. spot on!!!
This will make my fiancee very happy on Christmas.
author: DianeThis is a Christmas gift for my fiancee. He really wanted this one, so I know he'll be very happy. We have heard this CD before and thought it was great.
The first two cuts are worth the price of the CD
author: Brian DavisI worry that I may play wake up Charlie so many times that I wear the CD out. Amazing energy in the CD, just enough harmonies to keep it all fresh, and wonderful selection of the accompanying musical instruments. This is a real toe tapper, you will find yourself dancing in the living room.
Heartfelt, hope inspiring, melodies you keep singing, lyrics you can't forget
author: Clare De MayoI bought this CD for Barrel of Rain (which blew me away when John Katchur played it in Dunedin New Zealand - thanks John!)...took me a while to track it down, but boy it was worth it. The more I listen the more I discover...from catchy tunes to slow poetic melodies and lyrics... the humanity of holding onto a sense of dignity when life is difficult...the wreck and sow of the title. Great Album!
speechless
author: RossitzaDon't waste time reading reviews, listen to the music! It's amazing! And I'm speechless...
Perfect road trip music!
author: GallaleeThis CD starts strong with Wake Up Charlie and doesn't let up. There is not a weak track on the album. Their voices remind me a little bit of the Allman Bros. They really seem to feel the music and the lyrics. I like it much better than their other CD - this one is quieter, more introspective. A nice fusion of country and folk. It will be mandatory take-along music for every future road trip.
great, fun, feelgood, travellin' music!!
author: Iliff HicksI first hear Jeff Berkley when I went to see Steve Poltz live for about the 27th time or so last year. Jeff got up onstage when Steve left to use the toilet, and sang the song "High School Town". I was TOTALLY blown away!! What a GREAT voice.... and a GREAT storyteller too. I'd been looking for this CD since then, and I'm happy to say that the entire CD is equally as good. Do yourself a favor and check this band out! You won't regret it!!
93% perfection
author: Giancarlo Vespuchisongwriting songwriting songwriting. whew. the barrel-of-rain tune was worth the cost of the whole album, but that also could be true for a half-dozen others. harmony and vocals were flawless and a subtle production the accented rather than got in the way. 911 song was the only minor distraction... all said, don't miss the chance to see them acoustic/solo. they're a minor audio miracle in a sea of noise.
Incredible lyrics and captivating music.
author: Dave R.Incredible lyrics and captivating music. I can listen to these tunes over and over without growing tried of them. They evoke emotion and carry your mind deep into the songs. You'll love the music!
