notes

Berkeley just composed a new song that was featured in CBS's "Without a Trace." The episode aired on 2/12/04. The song is called "Fire Sign." It's not on The Confluence, but go to www.davidberkeley.com for a listen.

Berkeley also has released a second record (available through the little yellow link on the left) called "After the Wrecking Ships." Check it out today.

Rollingstone.com calls David Berkeley "a double fantasy of Nick Drake and Donovan," describing his voice as "sweeter than incense and peppermints."

Billboard Magazine says "Berkeley may have what it takes to win wide appeal... his melodies are fresh and sweet...his lyrics, often captivating."

This new collection of songs, "The Confluence," is a layered wash of natural sounds, warm like a tumbler half-full of bourbon, smooth as the silk square in your coat pocket. The album features guitars, mandolins, acoustic bass, cello, African percussion, trombone, sweet harmonies...

The influences are there: Nick Drake, Ryan Adams, Elliot Smith, Aimee Mann.

But David Berkeley sings from his marrow bones, and his writing is honest and refreshing, a conscious turn away from empty pop music and yet with melodic hooks that will linger in the brain.

You can catch this comet by its tail as David Berkeley orbits into stardom, or you can buy "The Confluence" now and be one of the first guard who will claim David Berkeley as the new darling of the folk world.

  • Excellent

Mesmerizing. Few albums are on par with Nick Drake's work. This is one of them. Haunting.

  • The New Drake

The Confluence doesn't sound out of place in between two of Nick Drake's albums, which is something that can be said of very few singer-songwriters. Perfect.

  • Simplly brilliant!

I wasn't sure if David Berkeley could possibly have a better album out there than After the Wrecking Ships, but The Confluence might just outdo his 2nd album. Song after song, the album sucks you in deeper to Mr. Berkeley's amazing talent. He's from the David Gray, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Jeff Buckley mold. FANTASTIC!

Excellent CD,A mix of Nick Drake,Damian Rice & an acoustic Ryan Adams.

  • Doesn't get any better
    author: LeeAnn Helton

If you like contemporary folk, do not let this pass you by. It does not get any better than David Berkeley's "Confluence" and "After the Wrecking Ships" for originality and soul. If you get the chance to catch a concert, do it!

  • David Berkeley's The Confluence = BEAUTIFUL
    author: Katie

This CD is so beautiful with so many stories to tell, and David Berkeley tells them in a manner of the highest quality. He sings not a key unperfectly, which in itself is unbelievable, but to know that he wrote these songs adds to the charm and magnificence of his debut album. Awe-inspiring!

  • Absolute Perfection
    author: Daniel Austin

This album is truly stunning, and soon to be the new standard for all us pop-folksters. Most modern folksters (myself included) spend their whole lives trying to capture the soul of Nick Drake, but David Berkeley is the first to not only master it in a single album, but to go one step further and surpass it.

  • Sometimes the glitter IS gold.
    author: James Laflamm

I first saw David at a small coffeehouse in Boston a few years ago. It was a lovely show, but to hear those songs come to life with a full band, in arrangements that are just as tight as you can imagine, has been a real treat. David has undergone a rare maturation process and turned himself from a coffeehouse folk act into the Real McCoy. A songwriter, arranger, and bandleader worthy of the tape. Generally, when you come across an album by an "unknown" artist, you find out pretty quickly that this anonymity is deserved, and that the rest of society has dodged a blow. But David has given, those of us lucky enough to have heard it, a gift with this record. Buy this album and your friends and neighbors will be spending a lot of time asking "who's that?" An album like The Confluence is a rare find.

  • Fall in love all over again with David Berkeley
    author: Norm Lasser

In a refreshingly heartfelt debut, New York's David Berkeley delivers songs for the romantic, the loner, the heartbroken, and the critic. This singer/songwriter will woo you with his voice and charm you with his words. "The Confluence" will make your other cd's jealous. Highlights include the breeze, strawman, and city of the second hand––songs that you won't soon forget. David Berkeley is the kind of musician who will rekindle past flames and reunite lost relatives.

  • Stunning Debut cd for Talented Singer/Songwriter
    author: Sandra Lea

David Berkeley's debut cd, "The Confluence," has the confident sound of a real pro. The smooth, seductive melodies showcase Berkeley's fine voice, which is edged with just enough heartache to hit home. He cleves to familiar themes -- love and loss, the desire to slow time and resist change -- but this is not maudlin music. Listen closely to the intense, carefully crafted lyrics filled with visual details and twists of phrase. And just when you're ready to light a fire, kick off your shoes, and relax with this impressive new talent, the apocalyptic title song, a haunting reminder of 9/11, will break the spell, like a sudden gust of icy wind. Tell your friends about this find.
