notes
Ben Rothbard is not your typical artist in today's pop/image driven world of music. He's got a unique style, with a difficult to pin-point, yet familiar sound. He first picked up a guitar at the age of ten and has since fallen victim to an over all musical obsession. Ben's love for traveling and culture has led him into numerous musical genres. He's been known to skip town for weeks at a time w/out any forewarning. "I just get this itch to go, til' I can't control it any longer. Then I just leave." He began experimenting with different instruments, such as the mandolin, harmonica, bass, piano, slide guitar and percussion throughout the years and has now made them an integral part of his musical repertoire. Ben writes, records and produces all his material inside an old, raw home studio that he has pieced together from a string of garage sales and thrift stores. By 2003, his studio had been assembled and he set off to record "Red Dress," his first and one of his finest recordings. Since then he has recorded dozens of wonderfully crafted and haunting songs. His sound can be described as a melting pot comprised of all the music and experiences that have gotten him to this stage in his life. The Delta Blues come through strong, with a solid dose of 60's rock and a hint of Nashville twang. At times you'll notice a Spanish influence, a touch of Billy Holliday style jazz or an Asian overtone. Ben Rothbard is a throwback in every sense of the word, with a great appreciation for attitude, edge and simplicity. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. It'll be worth you time.

I found this CD by clicking on album art covers and then listened to a cut. I liked what I heard. The songs are a wonderful composite of influences that have always caught my ear through the years. It's almost like having a best of collection from all my favorite genres of music on one CD by one artist! For people like me who fiddle around on guitar and piano and try to compose, this is what I wish I could have done! If music is your food in life, then this is a huge T-BONE STEAK, with all the trimmings!
This album just takes me away to another world.
author: KellyWith songs stemming from so many different emotions, this album allows me to take a ride through it all. At one second it inspires introversion and the next second you're stompin' your feet. I absolutely love it. A must buy.
Love it!! Love it!!! Love it!!!
author: Uncle GravyThis kid just flat out gets it. He has done his homework and clearly understands how to write, produce and record a song. For further proof, buy this album. It's one of the best I've heard in a long, long time.

I'm sold! I haven't heard anything like this in a while. It's good to see artists focusing on the "bare bones"/fundamentals of music instead of resorting to the commercial pop grabage. Ben has an eclectic mix of melodies, harmonies, and has a great buildup/release style on his solos. This guy has some serious talent. It's always refreshing to hear good music. The question is, where can I see this guy live???
Great Stuff - Take the time to listen to this!

A fantastic acoustic journey
author: JasonI first heard about Ben while in Indonesia on a surf trip in 2005. A friend making a documentary on Indonesian surfing had acquired some music from a guy in Santa Monica. The music fit his film and the surfing lifestyle perfectly. Rothbard's music is guaranteed to put you in that special place we all have been to, or are waiting to visit. I really enjoyed the blend of several different instruments, as well as the variation of influences within his music. Well worth the money.... buy this disc!
