BANDS ON THE CD

Jimbo Whaley
Jimbo Whaley prides himself on original and unique music. For Bell Witch: The Movie Jimbo brought original songs such as The Foundation, The Sentence, Fly, and the touching original love song, The Dreams We Dream. Jimbo Whaley adds old-time picking and new bluegrass sounds to Bell Witch: The Soundtrack.

Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike
Watching Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike's high-energy performances have been compared to "...being an eye-witness to a thermonuclear explosion." Her vocal tracks are no different. Valerie brings energy and life to Bell Witch: The Soundtrack with original songs like Ol' John Bell (Kate's theme) and Jacob Spence, and also classic spirituals like Wade in the Water.

The Jeanette Williams Band
The Jeanette Williams Band brings an emotional sound to Bell Witch: The Soundtrack with I Remember, a heartfelt song about love lost, and Mountain Way of Life, a tribute to the hardships of mountain living. Jeanette's crystal voice has been honored twice in Bluegrass Now magazine and has added an angelic tone to Bell Witch: The Soundtrack.

The Jeff and Vida Band
The Jeff and Vida Band have been playing their unique style of bluegrass music, blending Appalachian bluegrass and old-time country and blues, for the past four years. As lead vocalist, Vida's raw, gritty voice adds excitement and interest to all of their tracks and has been compared to Loretta Lynn, Iris DeMent, Janice Joplin, and Gillian Welch. Their original song, Dead and Gone, evokes questions about life after this Earthly one and their version of Shady Grove is unlike any other and brings a sense of the "other-worldly" to Bell Witch: The Soundtrack.

Becky Buller
Becky's accomplished songwriting has been a chilling lyrical addition to BELL WITCH: The Soundtrack with songs like Leave Well Enough Alone and Blind Beggar. But she plays on many other songs as the fiddler for Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike. Her voice also adds character to the film when she serves as the singing voice of Kate, the Bell Witch.

The Wells Family
The Wells Family is all about "having fun" with their music, and that life-full attitude shines through in their performance. Singing original songs like Make New Choices and classics like Talk About Suffering, the Wells Family brings tight, haunting, five-part harmony to BELL WITCH: The Soundtrack.

ABOUT BELL WITCH: THE MOVIE
Bell Witch: The Movie is inspired by the most terrifying, supernatural event in American history. Documented by the State of Tennessee, the Bell Witch haunted and tormented an early pioneer family, ultimately murdering the family patriarch, John Bell, and inflicting a reign of terror throughout the surrounding community. These disturbances took place during the 1800s in Robertson County, Tennessee, near the present-day town of Adams.

The Bell Witch's character was enigmatic assuming many different forms, speaking with disembodied voices, and manifesting itself as a poltergeist. The Bell Witch wreaked havoc with the violent physical torture of the Bell family as well as attacks upon the frequent visitors to the Bell home.

Over the years, many independent eyewitness accounts of this haunting have been written which have firmly established the story's credibility. These accounts include, but are not limited to, sworn affidavits, verbal accounts by members of the clergy, and detailed manuscripts penned by those who experienced direct encounters with the Bell Witch, including General (later President) Andrew Jackson.

As you will find, the story of the Bell Witch is the most unusual and horrifying of all the legendary ghost stories

I loved this cd! I stumbled on it when I read an article about the Bell Witch on the Internet. I am not an expert on this type of music. However I know what I like, and this cd is such a fine collection of various tunes. Highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys blue/grass or country.

  • Great Album
    author: KvB

This is a very good album. The singers are excellent. There are only a couple songs I tend to skip over, and I wish that Wayfaring Stranger was done with a full band. But it's worth getting. I hope to see the movie soon.

[February 2006 Issue] Don't run away, there's excellent bluegrass here. I haven't read the book. I haven't seen the movie. I find ghost stories, horror tales, superstition, and fantasy of every kind to lie somewhere between ludicrous and detestable. But this soundtrack can be enjoyed without any attention to the film, the book, or their themes. It's full of the usual bluegrass fare, love, murder, revenge, rural life, gospel, and all of it is well-sung and well-played. Jimbo Whaley sings fine traditional bluegrass lead on a half-dozen of the nineteen cuts; Jeanette Williams' clear, strong, sweet voice takes over on three numbers; Valerie Smith adds her wonderfully throaty, way-up-in-the-holler tones to four songs; and the Wells Family, whose marvelous harmonies are reminiscent of the Marshall Family, contributes two powerful gospel standards. Additional cuts by Becky Buller and the Jeff and Vida Band are equally effective. Instrumentation ranges from standard contemporary mainstream 'grass to older, moodier sounds, some of it close to old-time music. All the fiddle, mandolin, and banjo performances are compelling, and there are lots of creative arrangements throughout the disc. Particularly exciting is the hyper-bluegrass drive of the instrumental takeout on the opening cut. You won't encounter "movie Muzak" here,it's all solid bluegrass. The six bluegrass and gospel standards get nice treatments, but I found the originals (all written by various of the above performers) to be the freshest, most engaging material. Any of them would be welcome at a bluegrass festival, and none would sound like a show tune from Hollywood. In summary, an extremely well-sung, scintillatingly played, lyrically interesting set, with lots of variety from these talented musicians. Bluegrass fans , even if they have never heard of the Bell Witch. (Big River Pictures, 104 Church St., Sevierville, TN 37862, www.bigriverpictures.com.)JR

    author: Sue Moore

As a bluegrass lover and mother of a rising bluegrass fiddle star, the cd was wonderful and I have listened to it many times! The slow ballads really relax me and slow me down after a hard days' work. I will just be glad when the movie comes out!

    author: Joe Ross

Playing Time - 63:05 -- Over the years, some phenomenal bluegrass marketing and growth has been directly correlated with the music being used in movie and television soundtracks. Bell Witch premiered as a movie on September 24, 2005 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. On BGRASS-L, musician Kraig Smith posted a humorous account of twelve people cramming into a limo which comfortably seated 10 for the movie’s premier. The soundtrack showcases music from Jimbo Whaley, Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike, Jeannette Williams Band, Jeff and Vida Band, Wells Family, and Becky Buller. Interestingly, the movie’s premiere broadcast via satellite in full-bandwidth high definition video to over 80 theaters throughout the U.S. That’s a first for bluegrass music. In a story that documents a terrifying, supernatural event in the 1800s, the Bell Witch (“Kate”) haunted a pioneer family, murdered patriarch John Bell, and inflicted a reign of terror throughout the Tennessee countryside. The bluegrass soundtrack draws heavily from artists on the Bell Buckle record label (in Bell Buckle, Tn.) that has built a reputation for being able to tap into an authentic mountain consciousness with their original synthesis of old-time and bluegrass sounds. The soundtrack doesn’t feature any instrumentals, but it instead focuses primarily on ballads that bring plenty of apparitions to musical life. Because of its emphasis on lyrics, I wish that at least 6 panels of the fold-out 18-panel CD insert would have included a majority of the original song lyrics written by the artists. I particularly take to Becky Buller’s five compositions on the project and have always felt that she shows great potential for being a regular contributor to the bluegrass canon in the generation ahead. “Blind Beggar” and “Leave Well Enough Alone” were favorites, largely as a result of their juxtaposition of old-time instrumental work with very pleasing contemporary and bluesy vocal stylings. “Ole John Bell” documents the witch’s curse, and Valerie Smith and Becky Buller do a nice job presenting Kate’s theme song in rawboned fashion with only vocals and fiddle as the ghost comes to curse, claim and torment Bell’s “worthless soul.” Smith’s “Jacob Spence” is a lonesome murder ballad that masterfully captures the cold, dank feeling of serving a 20-year prison sentence. Debi Wells’ “Make New Choices” is given an a capella treatment. Jimbo Whaley also plays a big role as songsmith, leader of the band Greenbrier, and even in the movie itself. Whaley’s originals “Fly,” “The Foundation,” “The Sentence,” and “The Dreams We Dream” are standouts. With the instrumentalists being challenged, “Fly” captures a boy’s flight through a neighbor’s cornfields. The latter is a sensitive song subtitled as the Bell Witch love song that alludes to the many joys of sweet and tender togetherness. Mandolinist Jeff Burke and guitarist Vida Wakeman (of the Jeff and Vida Band) harmonize well together and offer up some nice renditions of “Dead and Gone” and “Shady Grove.” “Dead and Gone” asks for certain compassion and consideration when one’s time comes to go. Johnny Williams’ uptempo “What You Gonna Do” gets the toes tapping. As far as vocals on the soundtrack, Jeanette Williams is a standout on “I Remember.” Some of the other vocalists sing with raw or gritty character and sentiments. Kraig Smith speculated that the movie premier was somewhat like “a duck on a pond, cruising serenely on the surface, but paddling like heck underwater.” The Bell Witch movie soundtrack is a big coup for these artists. It may not have the same impact as “O Brother, Where Art Thou,” but it certainly shows that bluegrass music belongs in the movies on a much more regular basis. • I WAS AT THE PREMIERE AND IT WAS WONDERFUL
    author: Tatum

I was at the premiere at the Ryman and saw the movie and concert and all I can say is that it has changed my life, I have never seen such love among so many people that didn't know each other. I had the chance to meet Betsy Palmer and she is so kind, I also had a chance to meet some of the Bell family decedents and they said that they were so proud of this movie and how it showed there great grandfather in such a good light. The music is amazing and all the bands are top notch! I bought several CD's at the premiere one for me and one for my mother who lives in another state. All I can say is you will love the music and you will love the movie as well. Tatum from the Red Carpet

Very rarely does a film soundtrack really compliment the film or even the plot. The Bell Witch Soundtrack is the very best exception to the rule. Song after song takes you to other times and places, gives voice to restless spirits and sets the heart soaring with joyful emotions. BUY the CD and BEG to see the film!
