notes
Beki Hemingway is a singer/songwriter based first and currently in Denver, with stops in Chicago, Nashville, and Glasgow along the way, and she writes and sings some of the best songs you've never heard.
Her long and varied career has found her playing in several bands, including hysterical punkers This Train, as well as singing live and studio backup vocals on everything from industrial to inspirational music in Chicago. She went solo in 1997, and has been steadily gathering acclaim ever since.
She has released 5 CDs on Minneapolis-based indie Salt Lady Records, performing up to 150 shows per year, sharing the stage as an opener for such acts as Shawn Colvin, Aimee Mann, Pierce Pettis, Lowen & Navarro, and Vigilantes of Love.
After a two year break, Beki is writing for a new CD and beginning to fill the calendar with live performances with guitarist/producer husband Randy Kerkman.
"Beki only has one gimmick - she writes great songs. Okay, two gimmicks - she also sings them beautifully." -Andre Salles, www.tm3am.com
"Chicago's answer to Sheryl Crow" -Chicago Daily Herald
"an artist to look out for" -Chicago Tribune
"songs of relentless faith and charming insight" - Prism Magazine
"a tough and tender rocker" - St. Paul Pioneer Press

Very well tought out. Both the music and lyrics
author: Thomas BurgessI sit to write I find myself lost. I sit to listen to this CD and I am found. Very well thought out. Both music and lyrics A neat peice of art!
Caution
author: CelieOne word of caution...you can get hooked on this music. I know this from personal experience. I've been a fan of Beki's work for a long time, but with this CD especially, the more I listen, the more I love it.
Bekis vocals are a driving force of emotion
author: Weez/ 959 the RiverI have been familiar with Beki's vocie for many years. It is amazing. It is a powerhouse voice yet she can reign it in and deliver a very atherial sound. Beki has so much talent. Aspiring artists' should listen and learn. I have heard a lot of artisits come and go and so many do not match up to the talent of bekis vocals. She should be working with some of these you young artisit popping up and teach them a thing or two about great vocal control. Beki's vocals are a driving force of emotion.
"Words" will quickly become one of your favorite CD's!
author: AmyThis CD seems to show Beki's raw soul through her voice and the lyrics. This CD has been on heavy rotation in my CD library!
Beki's best album....heartfelt and artfully crafted
author: Kathryn SwezyThis is my favorite album by Beki! This one goes straight to the heart emotionally and leaves a mark. Beki is truly an artist when it comes to expressing herself in a fresh way—just listen to "To Spare You" and "Floating Away" to be moved powerfully. Though the album is heavy conceptually, there are songs—"Crows of Cashel" and "Siouxanne" for example—that have a whimsical bent in melody and lyric. This is a fantastic album.
She does so many things so well! Amazing!
author: SarahI'm a fan of everything from country to opera, and this cd is full of great music, lyrics, delivery, and tremendous variety. Sad songs, happy songs, songs that make you think. The lyrics stand alone, and Beki's voice has unbelieveable flexibility. But most of all, I find myself choosing to play this one over and over. It gets better and better!
- author: Paul in the UK
I first listened to this record on my IRiver a train out of Wales to England which trailed the River Severn. The music was to the ear what the scenery was to the eye. Her voice reminded me at times of Dar Williams's, but the range of her music was greater.
Tuneful, emotional and hard to resist
author: Brian CI had not heard Beki Hemingway's music before, but browsing through CD Baby's website, I thought I'd give this CD a listen. I am very happy I did! Words for Loss for Words is tuneful, emotional (at times heart-wrenching), and difficult to resist. I will have a hard time putting this CD away, and I highly recommend it.
Another solid album by Beki
author: underground willieThis is a little different from her first album and took me a few more listens to appreciate the material except for a couple of tracks that get your attention immediately. Beki is one of my "finds" on cdbaby that are special to me. Give her cds a try and you won't be sorry.
Seriously impressed!
author: Darren SheaThis CD is excellent - the musicianship and playing are only surpassed by the writing. I think "Only Thing Worse" has earned itself a spot in my top 50 songs of all time list, and there's not a single clunker on the CD. Highly recommended.
Very Good
author: LauraI've really enjoyed listening to this CD. I especially like the slower tracks. Beki Hemingway has definite talent in writing and performing her own songs.
