Beija Flor’s “The Quiet One and the Lonely One”, is pushing the boundaries of authenticity for Canadian music. With the albums first track The Quiet One, you are immediately hit with the sensation that something is about to happen. The whole album is dripping with influences from the 1920’s era of southern roots style piano layered beautifully over a haunting rock’ n’ roll format. “Perhaps their greatest strength lies in the hard-to-peg down nature of their music. Not conforming to any set genre, The Quiet One and The Lonely One hops around on an exhilarating aural rollercoaster palatable to fans of a wide array of styles.” Says Garth Paulson of The Gauntlet.
The Quiet One and The Lonely One is a combination of haunting melodies contrasted with fierce emotional punk rock changes. The band began writing the songs for the album two years ago, and it demonstrates Beija Flor’s ability both as accomplished musicians but also as astute song writers. Their lyrics read like poetry and embody a simple primal essence of life’s experience.
There is an element of childlike story telling in some of Beija Flor’s songs. The track titled “Miss May”, Beija Flor tells the story of a woman driven mad by loneliness after the loss of her husband. She begins stealing the town’s children for comfort and affection. The song strikes a familiar chord of alarm, childhood nursery rhymes, which like Beija Flor have an air of eeriness.
“So one by one she claimed them her sons, An army of children she stole from the town, Oh May don’t stray at the end of your days.”
Needless to say Beija Flor’s debut album “The Quiet One and The
Lonely One” is a rare gem of musical collaboration that demon-
strates their savvy as a new up and coming band.

This is a beautiful album, almost as great as when I heard them live. Plus an extremely fast delivery! CD case was slightly cracked however. I still love CDBaby.
