Referred to by Performing Songwriter Magazine as “brilliant and incomparable”, by All The Rage as Nashville’s “It Band” and by Music Row Magazine as the “Best Unsigned Band of the Year”, The Bees (U.S.) formed when producer Jason Lehning met singer/songwriter Daniel Tashian. Tired of predictable modern rock, they began to conceive a sound relying heavily on songwriting and harmonies. Starry Gazey Pie was independently released in 2004 and at the request of the band Guster, The Bees (U.S.) signed on as their opening act for dates throughout the Northeast and Midwest. The album has received airplay from tastemakers such as WFNX in Boston and KCRW in Los Angeles, and was chosen by XM Radio’s The Loft for their 2005 Top Ten list. The band has recently wrapped recording for their sophomore release “High Society” which will be released in spring 2006. The Bees (U.S.) are Tashian on 12 string guitar and vocals; Lehning on piano, juno 60, vocals; John Deaderick on bass and vocals and David Gehrke on drums and vocals.

author: Nicholas KentAh, I love that damn dreamy music. I would have to say that I like their newer cd(high society) better, but this one is still really great. I love the vocal melodies and how the blend with the music; something a little hard to find in today's music. The only song I could do without is Bring On The Clowns. Besides that, it's downright perfect!
A wonderful album
author: TychoI am very glad I bought this. To my ears, the songwriting is reminiscent of Elliott Smith, Neil Finn, Aimee Mann, and on par with them as well. And like another reviewer, I'd like to give a shout-out to XM's The Loft, where I first heard "Love is a Holiday" and knew I had to get the album.
Glad I found them... a hidden treasure!!
author: AiredogThanks to CDBABY for their quick delivery...I heard these guys on Pandora.com and said"Who is that??!!" and checked them out. Great melodies and hooks, super lyrics and above all the arranging and production values make the album. Not formulaic, every song stands on its own..I love "Message from the Birds"! 2nd album is even BETTER!!
Lovely!
author: JonasBrilliantly written pop, i love the dreamy atmosphere of "Sea of stars"! Of course i love the other songs as well, but that´s my favourite for the moment. It reminds me of a certain feeling from when i was about fourteen, lying on the beech, hearing the waves, looking at the sky, and there is only one big now.
If you like the first album you will sure love this one as well!
author: tomFantastic music, from a great band. The words and the melodies are just wonderful! I hope, they will come to Germany in the near future, so I can see and hear them on stage!! If you like Songwriter Josh Rouse, you will like The Bees as well!!
This is the pop album you've been waiting for.
author: Susan WengerIf you've been looking for acoustically flavored music but don't necessarily get excited by folk, you need to listen to Starry Gazey Pie. The mellow but powerful grooves, catchy melodies, and rich harmonies that permeate The Bees' debut album make you feel as though you're being carried along on gentle waves. I could dare you to try getting "It's Only Gravity" out of your head after you hear it once, but more likely than not you'll want to invite it to stay. Highly recommended!
Dreamy Pop With Plenty of Attitude
author: ShariI had never heard the Bees music until I subscribed to XM Satellite radio. All of a sudden, as I was driving down the road, I heard this awesome sound coming out of my radio, Starry Gazey Pie. This is the best CD I have heard in years. Soft and sweet, loud and rocking and plenty of attitude. I don't know alot about music but I know what I love and this is it! If you have the chance don't miss out on this AMAZING CD!
History of Starry Gazey Pie!
author: MartinI don't know where a Nashville Band like The Bees came upon the term "Starry Gazey Pie",but I want to tell you that it originates from the Cornish fishing village of Mousehole.Brenda Wootton,a local folk singer had an album of the same name on the Cornish label Sentinel. Tonight 23rd December,Starry Gazey Pie will be served at midnight at the Ship Inn at Mousehole in memory of Tom Bawcock,a Mousehole fisherman who was the only one brave enough to go out in the storm, many years ago,on this day. He caught seven kinds of fish, which the pie is comprised of.The fish's heads stick out from the top of the pie, hence the name! Tonight is known as Tom Bawcock's Eve,and many local Cornish people visit Mousehole tonight to see the lights which are set up in the harbour, and to sample the pie! This review came about as a result of me looking up the details of the celebrations tonight on the Internet and consequently listening to a sample of the album title track which I have to say is excellent. Needless to say,we will be driving down to Mousehole tonight from Falmouth to sample some Starry Gazey Pie!
Finally, Some great new music.
author: Jack GimbleAs a musician,I try to be as innovative as I can come up with, but, give me a break! The Bees new album has what i've TRIED to come up with. The lyrical content alone can make one feel close and personal to Daniel's thought. My personal favorite is Mrs. Wilson. Like I say to my band all the time.."It's all in the soul. Bring it to life." Congrats Daniel and the Bees. You did it. p.s. You were great at Schubas in Chicago w/Rouse. hope to see you soon.
One of the best CDs I've heard this year.
author: David ReynoldsI was sitting reading in a coffeehouse in Seattle one day when I heard a song over the sound system that made me stop reading and listen. After it finished, I made a mental note of what I figured was the title of the song -- Message from the Birds -- then did a websearch for this when I got home. I expected the title to belong to the latest and greatest up-and-coming group, major label, lots of play and excitement. Lo and behold, it was by an unsigned indie group I'd never heard of -- The Bees(US). Fortunately, CD Baby provided a way to order it -- so I did, and the rest is history. Or not history -- the CD hasn't left my CD player for three weeks, and I'm humming the songs everywhere I go. This is truly a stand-out album and far and away worth the few bucks you'll shell out to purchase it. Can't wait to see what they'll do next.
Good music can actually come out of Nashville!
author: AaronWhile the folks on Music Row saturate the industry with idiotic, lowest common denominator dreck, wonderful music like the contents of "Starry Gazey Pie" will probably go unnoticed by the masses. This CD is full of gorgeous melodies, harmonies, acoustic 12-string guitar, and moody keyboards. Do yourself a favor and buy this and let's create a buzz about The Bees!
pure pop goodness
author: jonathan barnesgreat work bees! i particularly enjoyed the sweet chord changes and the apparent respect for pet sounds-era studio/songcraft. highlights include 'love is a holiday', 'destiny on the lawn', and 'sea of stars'. keep it coming -- hope to see you in nashville soon!
You'd Be Missing Out
author: SuzanneYou'd be missing out if you don't try out a slice of this "Starry Gazey Pie." A wonderful album with rich vocals and complex yet catchy composition that is very accessible and touching. Recommended for anyone with taste!

SGP is amazing, full of timeless and beautifully crafted pop tunes. I too saw them open for Guster and have been under the spell ever since.
Aptly Named Slice of Ethereal and Sweet Pop Goodness!
author: Emily V.Haven't found your summer record yet? This one should be it. 10 shimmering and perfectly executed pop songs, not a dud to be found in the bunch. Uplifting and strangely melancholic at the same time, even a couple of nice toe tappers thrown in for good measure. If you are a pop fan who leans toward the romantic and ambient you will be thrilled with this one.
AMAZING album!!!!
author: LindsayMy friend Brendan and I enjoyed The Bees HUGELY when they opened for Guster on April 28 in Michigan!! I was so pleased to find their newest album online -- I bought a copy for myself and also one for my friend, and we've both been listening to our CD's nonstop. This album is sure to remain an oft-played favorite!!!
