"b.b. wolfe's debut album "A.K.A." is a road trip through a landscape of fear, sadness, hope, and triumph. It makes you want to hop a freight train and explore the possiblilites of the world. This is traveling music. Not your typical country album, b.b.'s vocals are a mix between Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan. The lyrics are poetic and poignant. They strike a chord with the listener's soul- from the part that feels despair, to the part that still has hope. From the song "Broken Ladder" to "And All" the listener is treated to an album that feels both comfortable and familiar. Like a great work of art, the guitar paints the broad strokes, while the dobro, steel guitar, and harmonica add the details that make this album rich and layered. Reminiscent of country music before it went pop, this is music to live by."

The Real Deal

Songs with meaning...
author: ChloeThis is not a slick produced disc with smooth edges and fancy arrangements and that is what makes the material so meaningly powerful. This is a disc, as JoHn Kennedy said in his review, that causes you to stop what your doing and listen, listen to the words while the music serves as a backdrop. These are songs of humanity and the condition that it sometimes finds itself in. I would encourage anyone to have a copy of their own.
He had a great Christmas
author: ddddakotaAfter hearing some a couple clips on public radio, my boyfriend was very intent on finding this recording. Luckily he doesn't have internet. I gave it to hom for Chrismas and he put it right in the player. He loves it. B.B.'s voice reminds him of early John Prine. Thanks for making me look good.

There's something about this disc that has me coming back.....
author: SamuelIt hasn't been more than a month ago that I purchased this disc in South Bend, Indiana. In that time I continue to come back and play it over some of my longstanding favorites. All I can say is there is more to this CD than meets the ear....there is something in it that B. B. is dangling in front of us and I believe it is found between the lines....that's were the genius of this recording is.
Strong Debut from a Singer-Songwriter of the Classic Style
author: Kevin JoinerB.B. Wolfe's debut (as far as I know) could just as easily have been recorded 30 or 40 years ago as today. This is its main strength. There are obvious influences, like the Dylanesque vocals and the Cosmic Cowboy steel guitar, and some not so obvious - Townes Van Zandt comes to mind. However, the genuine vocal-styling and lyrical honesty save it from any sense of being derivative. This is a CD with one foot planted firmly in the decade of folk songwriting that inspired it and the weight-bearing foot at times topical and always universal. It's both timely and timeless. The mood and tempo of the album are consistent, as is the melodic feel. Were the performances and songwriting not so engaging, the album would suffer from a sense of monotony. Likewise, the sparseness of the tracks can, at times, make the listener wish for a bit more adventurous arranging, but the occasional surprise keeps you listening, such as the sing-along, choral back-ups on Box of Nails. If you like classic singer-songwriting with a poet's flair for lyrical play and poignancy, you'll really enjoy this album. Buy it and keep an eye out for BB's next album. I'm sure it'll oughta be worth the wait.
Heartfelt Songs in a Debut CD
author: Len BuszkiewiczJust listening to the first verse of Box of Nails tells you that you are experiencing the work of a truly gifted lyricist. In this debut CD, B.B. Wolfe consistently delivers strong, vivid images in fresh new ways. His song Suitcase Kid is a touching, heartfelt message to a child of a failed marriage. It simultaneously expresses regret, love and reassurance in a straight-forward, lyrically-concise manner. My personal favorite on the CD, it is emotionally moving without any of the syrupy-sweet trappings frequently associated with such songs. The sparse musical arrangements, featuring B.B.'s acoustic guitar, Bruce Bartlett's subtle bass and highlighted by some excellent, restrained pedal-steel from Jim Shenk, allow the songs to stand on their own merit. This is an impressive start. Give it a listen.
Great songwriting, unique, rich, expressive singing.
author: joHn KennedyIt's a rare song that makes me stop what I'm doing, sit down, and move into that emotional space where I spent most of my time as a child: vulnerable and hurting one moment, laughing and carefree the next. Don's songwriting and singing take me there. The music is first-take quality, right from the heart, edges and rough spots included. I'm a friend of Don's and sing background on a couple of tracks so I'm hardly an unbiased reviewer. I give it four stars because I'm expecting even better work in the future and I need to give myself somewhere to go with the rating.
