notes

In the great big world of rock and roll, Detroit is a city known for its gritty garage sound. Local rags are teaming with pictures of bands in worn jeans and clever t-shirts, leaning pensively against brick walls...each hoping to resurrect the spirit of the MC5 or become the next White Stripes. Bazooka Jones is not one of these bands.

Blending the best of raw garage rock and well crafted power pop, Bazooka Jones have created a deliberately trashy form of rock & roll that is proud of its own disposability. Three and a half members, playing three and a half chords for three and a half, hook-laden minutes at a time. Like an off-color, rock and roll class clown, Bazooka Jones is the band you hate to love.

Fronted by a 4' 11' rock and roll dynamo Viagra and backed by the crunchy, guitar attack of her 6' 3' ventriloquist dummy Bullethead, the band delivers in spades, both sonically and visually. The pumping rhythm section of Billy Love (drums) and Killer Clyde Varney (bass), lock these power pop gems into a serious groove with 'swagger' to spare.

If you prefer power pop that's heavy on the 'power' and garage rock that still knows how to 'roll', then this is the band for you. An infectious bombast reminiscent of early glam/punk bands like T-Rex, Sweet and The Ramones that manages to deliver a raw, contemporary sound that brings to mind such bands as The Donnas, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Hives.

This is the kind of band I fantasize about being in. Not only does it sound like they're having fun, but the songs are great, well-crafted, pop gems. All the songs have energy, melody, and a naughty sense of humor. If I had a job, it would be my favorite CD to listen to while driving to work!

What a great album. The show is even better. It's fun listening. A must have for the collection.

  • Not Just Rock, But ROLL!
    author: Jo6Pak

Quite simply, this is THE best album by an American group I have heard in a long time. A VERY long time. I never get tired of hearing it and when I not playing it, I am singing it in my head. HOOKS. Lots of great hooks. I whole-heartedly recommend it to all you people that are sick and tired of the same, tired crap put out by the major artists/labels. I await, anxiously for their second offering...

  • Power Pop for the people!
    author: Davey Dee

If you like your rock crunchy & hooky, Bazooka Jones are for you. Pants Off is the best album opener I've heard in years, and the rest of the CD doesn't let down. Vocalist Viagra reminds me of Blondie/Joan Jett, and Bullethead's guitars never let up. I love it.

  • You'll need to buy two copies because if you lend it to somebody they won't give it back. This is the best new music I've heard in the last 4 or 5 years. Retro power pop punk with a bit of a 60's feel to it and it really kicks ass. Funny lyrics and vocals by the incredibly talented Viagra Jones. Perfect for listening to while cruising with top down or the sunroof open in the summer. On a scale of 1-5 it's a 10.

  • Excellent!

I'm with you cdj, but I would also add The B52's and The Pretenders to the lovefest in the alley! Great hooks, great guitar sound, and a voice that fits the music perfectly! I can't stop listening to this cd. Hello - My name is Tim and I'm a Bazooka Jonesaholic!

The best way to descibe this c.d. is: If the GO GOS went into a dark sleazy alley and met up with CHEAPTRICK and they had dirty alley sex! They bore a bastard child and named it BAZOOKA JONES! CATCHY, SULTRY, GROOVE LADEN, All apply. What are you waiting for? BUY IT!

I LIKED IT ! Bazooka Jones has an olde-school sound, without the complications of the PC sensibilites abounding in the moidern world. It reminds me of the heady days of my youth, of drive in's and making out while the parents were away. They take the music seriously while not taking themselves too seriously. The toe tapping sounds remind me of the danceable tunes I grew up loving. STRONG and Enjoyable, give Bazooka Jones a ride-A BAZOOKA RIDE !

  • Hang on for a high speed ride of infectious power pop.
    author: Blues Bunny

A high speed ride of Blondie-esque and Ramones influenced power pop. “Pants Off” is a raucous no nonsense song that gets you rocking along with the band from the outset, and “Life of the Party” has a compulsively catchy rhythmic beat that sweeps you along. There is also a superb and manically aggressive version of Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walking” – well, if you really must cover a classic song then you should make the effort to do something original rather than just imitate. With this release Bazooka Jones may have put the ‘bum’ into album, but they’ve certainly left it out of the notes!!

Love this album! Big fat hooks, and lots of juicy guitar. I'm a sucker for great powerpop and this has been my CD of choice for the last month...don't get sick of it!
