Original Americana-roots-country-folkrock-newgrass synthesis beautifully written, sung, played, arranged...featuring Terry Robb, Tony Furtado, and other master musicians supporting Collins' rich vocals and Barteletti's haunting, hopeful, poignant songs.

notes

The CD marks the first collaboration between vocalista-extraordinaire Reina G Collins and master-songwriter Rob Barteletti under the experienced guidance of producer and guitar-guru Terry Robb. These roots-inspired, dark, hopeful, witty, poignant, lyrical songs were recorded in August at Dennis Carter’s Falcon Studios in Portland.

On the CD, Collins sings all but one of the songs, while Barteletti contributes his muse to most of the compositions (and his voice to the final track). The CD also features the musical talents of Robb (guitars), Tony Furtado (dobro, dojo, banjo), Bart Ferguson (harmonica, background vocals), Nick Peets (background vocals), Peter Boe (piano), Paul Hirschmann (guitars, mandolin), Jeff Minnick (drums), Nancy Ives (cello), Bob Baker (violin), and Rob Busey (bass).

Collins spent her first thirty years in Florida where she played in pop rock band Multi Color House and then changed direction toward jazz and Brazilian music with pianist composer Kamau Kenyatta. She then crisscrossed the continent on solo road trips, landing in San Diego and then in Los Angeles in the early 90’s. She got to know the Rocky Mountain region while touring for a year with a country rock band led by Billy Farmer.

Collins’ rambling led her to Teton Valley, Idaho, her home from 1996-2005. There she established Driggs’ first retail music shop, Big Hole Music. Those years were spent playing music with notables such as Greg Creamer, Jeff Newsom, Ben Winship, Ted Wells, David Bundy, Marshall Davis, Jerry Linn, and Michael Hurwitz. Winship assisted Collins in making Kitchen Sink, her first solo CD (also available on cd baby.com). Collins got the itch again and relocated to Portland in Fall 2005 where she had the good fortune to cross paths with songwriter Rob Barteletti.

Barteletti has been writing songs for several years and several ears: from folk to bluegrass to country to blues to pop to rock to jazz. Along the musical road, he has written nearly 200 songs, finally releasing a CD, Old Sombrero, in 2005 (also available on cd baby.com). Earlier in 2006, he formed an artistic partnership with the diva-caliber Collins.

  • You feel the music in your heart.

Warm vocals with an edge that makes you want more. Each song gets Better and Better along with Reina's vocals - like good wine.

  • This is a truly great CD!!!!!!!!

I know who that "curly-topped" artist is! From the photos on his website, it looks like he's not so curly anymore, but, man, can he write songs! This is a truly great CD, sounds like something right out of Nashville or Memphis. What great musicians, and what a talented singer Reina is -- wow! As much as I like her singing, I wish "old curly" had sung more than one song, just so we'd get more of a flavor of his take on his songs, but Reina is truly a wonderful singer. Of all the songs, my favorites are "Even If I Fall," "Yonder Ship," "Blue Sky," "Honky Tonk Band," "Cattail Boy,""Something Blue," "The Only Truth," and "Youth is wasted on the Young." Actually, the song that is easy to overlook because it's slow and dark but is an amazing poetic, sadly gorgeous song is "Harlan County." And "Cain's Lament" is also a great song about, I think, losing your soul. And the love song "Too costly is Nothing" is beautiful in it's simple arrangement and graceful poetry. I guess I like them all a lot! Great CD!!!!!!

  • This is fabulous!

There is so much energy to the music, so much wonder in the lyrics. I went to elementary school with one of the two artists and I would never have guessed there was this much talent and passion and good-heartedness beneath the curls. I highly recommend it.

  • Great stuff!

What a great surprise! Reina is the real deal. Real talent, good songs and tasty production. In this age of packaging for who know's what, a gifted singer gives an inspired and convincing performance backed by talented players. Here's a feast for the discerning ear to devour.

  • Reina has such an amazing voice!!
    author: Heather McDougall

Every time I hear Reina sing I always think what an amazing voice she has -- no matter what type of music she sings and she can sing it all!!! She has a very rare talent and I admire her so much.

  • It's another HIT!!!
    author: SK Shannon

Every time I hear Reina's voice I get goose bumps. This time is no exception ... each song brings a new rash. Even the one with Rob doing the vocals. I was flashed back to Mr. Dylan and his gravelly voice that sang soooooo much! My favorites are Cattail Boy, Whole New Way, and Youth is Wasted on the Young. Mighty fine lyrics, smooth vocals and great attention to details. I gave it a 4 only because I know the next one will be even better. That's how it is with Reina ... like a good wine, etc. etc. Even If I Fall can be equally as addicting. Try it ...

  • My favorites are "Yonder Ship" and "Even if I Fall"
    author: Erin DeKlotz

I love the lyrics of all of Rob's songs. When I listen to one of them, it is as if I am having a deep conversation with a friend, hearing his life stories. I can't stop singing "Yonder Ship!"

  • can't take it out of my changer
    author: Paul Grubb

When I first get a new disc I try not to listen to it too much so i don't burn out on it... but i keep coming back to "Even If I Fall" like an old man to memories of his youth. Somehow its fresh every time while still deeply personal.

Lyrical singing and beautiful musicianship make this CD well worth it. There were several tracks I loved. Cattail Boy and Big ol'house remind me of the ballads of Harry Chapin. I love Reina soulfull sining on The Only Truth and Rob's weathered voice lends such credence to Youth is Wasted on the Young.
