notes
Impostor is David Barrett's fifth solo album and it contains solos, duets and more elaborate arrangements that feature David on acoustic, classical, electric, steel, and bass guitars. Drawing from styles as diverse as minimalist composer Steve Reich to fingerstyle guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, Impostor explores a wide range of influences, both new and old, that have had a major impact on David, both as a guitar player and as a composer. Some of the song titles give away the inspiration for each tune while others are more obscure. Two cover songs are included on Impostor, Alex Lifeson's Broon's Bane, a beautiful modern classical composition and Stephen Bennett's At This Moment, in which David takes a tune originally written for harp guitar and expands on it by adding electric and steel guitars. A variety of vintage Gibson guitars, Fender Champs with ambient miking techniques, various guitar picks made from unusual materials like bone and metal, as well as an array of analog and digital effects, including ring modulators, were all used in the recording process. The recording was produced and engineered by David Barrett and mastered by Sascha Tukatsch.
