DEATH TO UNICORNS, WITH LAUGHTER

No. The Brobdingnagian Bards are not unicorn haters. Okay, at least Marc isn't... But that is the witty translation of "Nex Monoceroti, Per Risibus".

Why? You will have to listen to the CD to find out. What we can tell you is that for years, Nagians (fans of the Brobdingnagian Bards) have asked again and again, "When will you release a live CD?"

There was no easy answer to that question. We wanted something that perfectly caught the imagination and humour of our live show. We wanted a recording that made you feel like you were there. We think we found just that.

In the spring of 2007, we performed at the Tipperary Inn in Dallas. We recorded the show as usual, but we got our first clean recording of the show. The audience was Really into the performance singing and shot along. We were in good form with lots of jokes, anecdotes, and of course, songs. It was beautiful!

As we left the pub that evening on our way to Oklahoma, we listened to the recording and said in unison, "We have to turn this into a live CD." Between the Tipperary and a couple other show, we were able to pull in about ninety minutes of great music. We pruned that down to about 70 minutes of music that we feel captures the heart of our show.

It's not always perfect, but it will leave you with a grin from ear to ear combining some of our most-popular songs with quite a few new gems.

I turned up this music especially Brobdingnagian Bards last week and I´m fascinated! Alas, my English isn´t so good for understanding each word because their speech is very quick for me; fortunately I can read texts through web.

I don't buy too many live cd's but I took a chance on this one and i'm glad I did. It makes for good background music while web surfing, driving, or even working out. Carry on Marc and Andrew.

the more you enjoy it. I really loved the jokes next to the music just as well. Be sure you are seated well, because you might tumble off your chair laughing with this musical duo. Really, listen yourself, because I can not discribe it.

  • Lots of laughter!

The bards never disappoint!! Other people on the road were likely wondering what this red-head was listening to as she laughed hysterically alone down the highway. They'd only need to listen to this album to know why!!

How much fun and laughter can two folk musicians pile into one concert? Plenty if those two jolly fellows happen to Be Marc Gunn and Andrew McKee, who are indeed two jolly fellows and then some. Their most recent effort, "Nex Monoceroti, Per Risibus" (Death to Unicorns with Laughter) is completely live and completely entertaining as Marc and Andrew give us traditional Irish and Scottish material, interspersed with orginal songs on topics ranging from Smerfs, Jedis, dragons, virgins, leprechauns, Irishmen who don't drink (imagine that!), and reasons why George Lucas isn't as great as we thought he was. 'Star of the County Down" showcases perhaps Andrew's best recorder playing ever "recorded" (sorry) on CD, and Shel Silverstein's "The unicorn Song" features perhaps Marc's most-highest pitch sobbing ever recorded on CD. Gunn's autoharp playing is stunning throughout the album, as is Andrew's quick wit and occasional mandolin licks. Do not miss "Pachebel's Cannon/Old Dun Cow". This shows just how versatile the Bards are...they can silence an audience with a slow, guiet instrumental, and then, out of nowhere, they can move an entire audience to shout along to a raucous, Irish drinking song. Also reccomended is the Celtic Folk/jazz track, a rendition of Glenn Miller's "In the Mood". Good times all around; this album will not dissapoint, and it is a perfect place to start for those wondering what the Bards are all about.

Wonderful CD. Full of what makes the Bards one of my favorite live acts. Their chemistry is terrific and much of that comes through on this CD. You lose a little musicality with the live performance and that keeps this review from being 5 stars. But whether listening to regular or live CD's or going to see the Bards perform, it's always worth my time and money. Andrew and Marc ROCK! And I'm glad they don't really want to kill the beautiful unicorns. <g>

  • Love it!

Driving home in rush hour traffic on a Friday night in Portland, OR -- I think I'm the only driver grinning all the way home! What a fun album! Not only the songs but the banter is great but Marc's giggle is contagious!

The album really captures the joy and humor Marc and Andrew bring to their music. What a fantastic romp!

The one thing I don't like about this CD is that I wasn't there. This recording was almost as good as being at one of the Bard shows. The freewheeling banter between all involved, as well as, the only the fly changes to songs is so typical of one of their shows. It almost as good as being there.

The BARDS are wonderful. Saw them in person once and have been a little in love with Andrew ever since. This live album is almost as good as being there in person, but not quite. Excellent show ! ! ! ! !

  • The Bards sparkle live

If you're a fan of live music, this is the album for you! On this album there's a lovely selection of Bard Banter, with audience participation and comedy improvisation. The guys were really on their highest level of wit when they recorded these songs, and the recording is a feast of humor and pop culture references for the media fan. But there's plenty of music too, in fine Bard Style! I've always maintained that the guys lose a certain something if you don't hear them live, and this is as close as you can get to being at a Live Bards Concert without actually being there.

I cant help but feel like this Bards C.D. will be a top seller. I like the live version because you get to hear the real music and not something thats been processed. Being a_bards_fan that I am...this C.D. make a total of 9 and I have 4 more to purchase on my wish list and I cant think of a better christmas present for my wife to get me!...;) Randy ( a_bards_fan )

The Bards at their best! Along with great singing and playing, you get a taste of their wonderful interaction with the audience. They are so much fun to listen to in person, and this CD captures that excitement very well. I keep it in my car (I drive alot) and it's the first thing my daughter pops into the player when she rides along. Who says teenagers don't know good music? Mine does! As she says, "Brobdingnagian Bards rock!"
