Banjo Gathering is exactly what it claims to be: "100% pure old-time banjo, unobscured, unaccompanied & unadulterated." This two-disc set contains a whopping fifty selections played by an assortment of old-time banjo pickers including Mike Seeger, John Cohen, Cathy Fink, Bruce Molsky, and many others. It would be impossibile to mention all the noteworthy performances featured herein. However, they include plenty of both well-known and less familiar pieces like "Arkansas Traveler," "Miss McLeod's Reel," "Fish On A Hook," "Mole In The Ground," "French Waltz," and many others. "Banjo Gathering" is a momentous undertaking and a must addition to any serious collection of old-time music. (Steve Baughman, 111 Pine St., Ste. 1350, San Francisco, CA 94111,

Banjo Magnificat.
author: Yann, France. This double CD compilation is a masterpiece, essential to any traditional American music aficionado. Wonderful tunes and arrangements played in various styles and tunings by skillful and experienced instrumentalists on different types of banjos. These musical gems are of the highest interest to the connoisseur, though they might seem somewhat esoteric and repetitive to uninitiated ears. The CD leaflet provides detailed information on each participant (musical background, instruments...) and on each tune (source, style, banjo tuning...) To conclude this review, I would like to congratulate and thank all the persons who contributed to this very well-crafted compilation, BRAVO! ENCORE! Please Mr. Executive Producer, what about a second opus? Thanks to CD Baby for the great service.
Banjo Gathering
author: Libby McLarenThis is the album of the year for me. The choice of players, the selections they chose to play, the outstanding production work of Steve Baughman and Derek Bianchi pull the whole album together in the finest banjo compilation ever created. I am so happy to listen to these tunes everyday. Thank you for making it happen! 10 stars to this double CD!
Glorious
author: Michael NiemanThe true, ancient, Afro-Celtic music, played by the greatest living masters. These are heartwood sounds. Buy it! And buy it from CD Baby. They are the best!
Great CD
author: GloriaThis is a great collection of old time banjo songs, it is impossible to choose a favorite song. What's not to like?
an excellent compilation of tunes capturing the music of the pickers
author: Gaetano BevilacquaFor guitarists who would like to know about the tunings of the banjo and the repertoire that exists in this field of instrumental music, this collection is essential. The first CD is truly outstanding.I like the tunes like Cumberland Gap,Shortening Bread,as well as, the other more traditional tunes in the double CD package. The second CD contains a second tune, by the same performers, appearing on the first CD.These tunes expose the vast and different techniques of the banjo, including frailin the banjo! I will include the recording of two or three of these gem tunes on my website `On American day,A tribute`.It should be fun to work these compositions out in different tunings on the guitar. You will love the creativity and the inspiration from the Banjo Gathering. Tanino, singer/songriter/instrumentalist Downunder.
A fine recording!
author: David FrenzelI found this recording to be more than "just a banjo CD". I have been playing it frequently, and even my kids (who don't like old-time) seem to enjoy it. At least there's not the usual complaints. I find it very musical and tasteful, and more diverse than I would have expected. A real pleasure. A must-own if you play banjo.
einzigartig, noteworthy
author: Hans-Jürgen Schwitkowskii think i am the First to write a review in german Language, because my English is to badly for write a Review. Diese CD ist einzigartig, vor 60 Jahren gab es kaum noch Clawhammerbanjospieler, nun erfährt diese Spielweise eine neue Hochblüte, diese CD ist der Beweis daß die Tradition weiterlebt.
All the tracks are top notch...
author: Rich Parkerbut that thumper of a banjo on "Bony Crossing the Alps" is worth the price of admission!
Should I put gut strings on my other Sears banjo?
author: Franz SchneiderI don't know if a non-banjo player or fan would be caught by these CDs the way I was, but I was. Every cut was both beautiful and accessible, played with great skill but leaving me to believe I could achieve at least some of what is done here. I played it three times in two days, something I NEVER do. Many of the artists I know almost well enough to think of as friends, but the others I didn't know are just as good. These CDs will be loved, played, and used.
Must-have for clawhammer players
author: JohnAbsolutely wonderful. A treasure trove of exemplary playing in a variety of styles. Although most non-banjo players would get bored, after a few tunes, every budding clawhammer player should own this CD. If you don't get inspired to learn at least a dozen of these tunes, you might as well hang up your banjo.
