An intriguing mix of dark rock, ambient love songs, and Americana featuring Daniel Lanois, Mick Harvey and Hugo Race.

notes

"Matter of Time" is the debut from singer, songwriter and guitarist Bambi Lee Savage. Included in this eclectic collection of original compositions is a version of "Darlin'", Ms. Savage's contribution to the "Sling Blade" soundtrack. "Darlin'", featuring Daniel Lanois on solo guitar, provides a rare moment of sweetness and light on the CD, which is often dark and reflective.

"The voice snakes in around the cracks of the song like a curl of smoke, a vapor stinking of lust and poison. "I threw everything away/That you'd ever given to me/All the things I saved are gone/The dead flowers from the time/That my little baby died," Bambi Lee Savage groans in a throaty, shaded whisper in her song "Dead and Gone." Clots of discordant piano clog veins of pounding feedback, and the bass line throbs like a tick in the temple. "Dead and Gone" is just one of many paeans to the dichotomy of passion and pain that appear on her debut full-length. On the first four songs on Matter of Time, The Bad Seeds influence is pervasive; "Whiskey Well" is a folklore-like parable about spirits, both liquid and phantasmal, and the title track is a loping, tribal threnody with swooning chord changes and Savage's husky, spoken-sung delivery.
"Darlin'," is a hushed, languid folk tune that sounds like the Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning" as read by Gillian Welch."

I am currently in Afghanistan, employed by the U.S. Embassy. I have a bootleg copy [a lot of those here] of Slingblade. I have never heard that song before even though I have seen the movie a few times. I had to buy it and send it home to my wife. I think of her every time I hear it . Thanks, Donald Cawthon.

Matter of Time is a great album, smooth transistions, tight guitar work and hypnotic vocals. It will draw you in and keep you. A CD you will play again and again.

I bought the CD for the song Darlin. I've heard it on Slingblade for years, and finally decided I wanted the song. More than worth it.
