notes

What happens when hip-hop becomes fluid, when it moves from a needle and a record to a drumset, bass, and keyboard? What happens when a virtuosic quartet of musicians possess the freedom to craft the music behind three charismatic emcees, like a d.j.? And what happens when that d.j. has one of the illest record collections of jazz, global, and rock records that you've ever heard? It certainly doesn't feel the same every time, but if you talk to the members of Bad News Jones that's the whole point. This group's sound is like a two-headed monster, just as likely to be driven by the pulse of its musicians as its boisterous emcees, and delivers a reflection on past musical traditions while simultaneously exploring new ones. And as they near their five-year anniversary, they are only at the tip of the iceberg, with their inventive blend thriving within the budding live-band hip-hop scene in Chicago.

Bad News Jones first broke onto the Chicago scene during the summer of 2001, when they began hosting an open mic event at Subterranean called "Floetry". A beacon of creativity in the artisan community of Wicker Park, "Floetry" quickly helped establish the name of Bad News Jones within the minds of their listeners, as well as draw praise from the open mic participants, who supported the event during its two and a half year run. Since breaking onto the scene, Bad News Jones has performed at venues all across the city, such as the Hothouse, the Abbey Pub, and the Note, and has performed alongside local giants Family Tree and journeymen Heiruspecs. This past January, Bad News participated in the album release entitled The Chicago Drop, a compilation of Chicago's up and coming hip-hop acts, which culminated in a party at the Metro. This spring, the group releases their first-self titled EP, and is currently beginning work on a full length album while continuing to work on expanding their sphere of influence.

This album epitomizes the use of both sides of the BadNews brain: not only is the logicallly structured and analitical Yang present in every beat, every rhyme, but the abstract and surreal Yin is equally experienced throughout this lyrical ride. This isn´t just instrumental hip hop, BadNewsJones is pure mischief for the mind.

  • Bring on the jazz

A phenomenal debut album. From the very first track, Bad News Jones settles into a super-tight grove that carries through the entire disc as they weave in elements of jazz, Latin, and even klezmer music (particularly on The Goodman, which is an outstanding track in and of itself). Totally solid musicianship, a well-engineered mix, incredibly talented MCs and a refreshing take on the hip-hop aesthetic make this one of the most satisfying albums I've heard in a long time. How anyone could want *less* jazz and more rapping -- particularly when both are executed with such skill here -- is a mystery to me, but those with a passion for old-school funky jazz and an appreciation of live instrumentation backing up rapped lyrics will love this album.

"Somewhere in the blur, hope became a four-letter word, but not in my world, I refuse to unfurl, refuse to unravel," raps Badnewsjones. And he's absolutely right. Not only did "hope" become impractical, but somewhere along the line, holding oneself to high standards and celebrating the positive side of the coin also got associated with elitism. Badnewsjones does a damn good job of setting these type of matters straight. With jazzy, soul-bred tapestries, echoing masters like the Roots, Common, the Beastie Boys and Jurassic 5, the album is not only a lyrical enigma but shines with professional quality beats and grooves- some of the best alternative hip hop you'll find on the site.
