notes

Mark Holland has been perfoming and recording with native
American flutes since 1995. His project, Autumn's Child
has been described as "genre-bending". A mixture of
native American influenced, world, jazz, classical and folk
styles. "Four Winds" was nominated for a Native American
Music Award. Holland has appeared as a featured performer
at the 2 International Native American Flute Association Conventions in Taos, New Mexico and Kent, Ohio. His last studio CD, "Progressive World" was voted #12 of the top 25 CDs for 2002 on Echoes (Public Radio International). Holland's music has been heard on Public Radio International, National Public Radio and Jefferson Public Radio stations.
"Four Winds" the collection is said to be the best
introduction to the music of Autumn's Child. It contains
music from 7 different CDs featuring the haunting beauty
of the native American flute along with cello, acoustic guitars, grand piano, string harp, upright bass and various
world percussion. "Four Winds" has been in Echoes Radio's
monthly top 15, several different months. Mark Holland's
flute playing is described as "healing, meditative,
uplifting, sensuous, passionate, with technical precision."
Holland's music sounds as if it has influences by R.Carlos Nakai and the group, Oregon (both artists Holland has performed with) The best way to explain such a unique sound is to hear it first hand....
please listen to the sound samples presented here and experience this eclectic mix of music inspired by
nature's beauty and enjoy this appreciation of musical
styles, which together create a harmonious balance and a
sound that is truly - "one of a kind."

"Holland's talents as a soulful, dedicated player are well
known. His mastery of his flute is truly impressive!"
PJ "Coyote Caller" Birosik, "nationally syndicated reviewer"

"Mark Holland is fresh and stylish in his native flute
playing. His sound is mellifluous and enjoyable. He is
masterful in his handling of melodic lines, executing
tasteful embellishments and ornamentation. Holland is a
skilled and refined musician".
Dr. Kathleen Joyce-Grendahl, "Executive Director of
the International Native American Flute Association"

"Mark is among the most talented writers and performers
of the contemporary native American flute on the scene
today. His music pleases the ear and calms the soul.
He continues to take the native flute to new musical
dimensions not often achieved by other native American
flute artists."
Dan Ricketts, "Voice of the Wind"

"Autumn's Child is an acoustic music lovers dream come true.
A perfect example of what the term "fusion" means".
Bill Binkelman, "Wind and Wire"

"Wonderful and powerful sense of balance and purpose -
performances are simply stunning! A melting pot of styles...
Jimmy D. "Instrumental Weekly"

"Holland plays flute with passionate grace and his tone
is pure and sweet. Holland is a graceful, affecting flutist
with great command of his instrument."
Steve Ryals, "syndicated reviewer"

FOUR WINDS: THE COLLECTION brings together 15 tracks recorded between 1998 and 2002 by Autumn's Child, one of the musical projects of Native American flautist Mark Holland. Holland's explorations are always interesting in that they encompass the traditional sounds and moods of Native American woodwinds. At the same time, Holland reaches out to different genres, including world music, jazz, and acoustic ambient, creating music that is as unique as it is relaxing.
Holland is joined here by a variety of musicians, including guitarists, keyboard players, and auxiliary percussionists, among others. Titles like "Moonlight on Chautaqua" and "Ghost Hawk Dancing" evoke Holland's Native American themes, while "Birdsong Rising" and "Row of White Trees" paint gorgeous, naturalistic tableaus. The genre-blending never sounds jarring or forced. The dominant mood here is tranquil and soothing throughout, making FOUR WINDS a perfect complement to meditation and relaxation at any level, in addition to its function as an Autumn's Child sampler. reviewer unknown.

  • Unlimited Harmony
    author: Randy Hodge

Autumn's Child celebrates the harmony of the traditional Native American flute and worldly genres. I had to listen to this album several times consecutively to satisfy my musical appetite. I intend to learn to play some parts of these songs myself. As they say, "Imitation is the greatest form of flattery". I'm looking forward to their next release.
