"Damn Fine Blues"

notes

The concept of this album was to capture the spirit of ten different styles of blues. The styles range from the 1920's acoustic blues to the present day blues rock. I lived off of the sales of this album for a year after cutting off my leg! Peace, Austin Walkin' Cane"

Help Yourself is one of the most spontaneous and energetic blues albums this reviewer has heard in years. This record sounds like it was recorded in the 50's (in a cool way ... this is a compliment) and the overall vibe is like a bunch of guys hangin' out, drinking beer and jamming. Perhaps this vibe was achieved by the appearance of no fewer than nine special guests playing anything from a pizza box, a 1930's ashtray to a sledgehammer.

"Mississippi Jim" which clocks in at over 11 minutes, is a tour de force in homage to blues legends Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix - and Walkin' Cane quotes both guitarists during the sprawling solo. The Jimmy Cox staple "Nobody Knows You (When You're Down and Out)" is given a another twist here, and is a far more credible rendition than the one appearing on Clapton's Unplugged.
