notes

Atomic Mint's debut release hosts a sparkling range of variety.

Melodic rap, catchy electric guitar riffs, acoustic rock, and solid grooves are all a part of the program. Still these songs are bound together with the quirky, playful Atomic Mint signature sound. "We want our fans to relate to us in a bigger way, rather than through one narrow musical style." said Brianna Wanlass, front woman, guitarist and chief songwriter of the band.

The Mint worked very hard to independently produce these 11 original tracks at Brianna's Los Altos home. Atomic Mint won "Best Song" at www.pcrecording.com in 2000 with a composition entitled "Picnic". The contest judges at pcrecording.com explained their decision by saying, "Raw, clean and tight, this song simply rocked."

Atomic Mint recently dropped A Better Mouse Trap on the masses. The band's debut album does not disappoint, mixing varying genres together to craft a minty-fresh product. California-based Atomic Mint is composed of 3 musicians: Brianna Wanlass, Dave Hermocillo, and Amade Donofria. After putting out a demo in 1999, they finally released their first full-length album independently earlier this year. The album actively attempts to (rather successfully I might add) avoid any particular label, but imagine a funky Red Hot Chili Peppers-style backbeat with Wanlass' vocals soaring over the instruments. It's a mix that works much more often than it doesn't. The album kicks off with the simple, yet exciting "I Don't Even Know." With great guitar riffage accompanying fun lyrics, name-dropping Indiana Jones and talking about how she "can't win if she can't swim," the song is a solid leadoff track. The next song -- a personal favorite thus far -- is the acoustic number, "Desert." Wanlass's voice combines with Donofria's drum skills help forge an excellent track. The vibe continues into "Lucky Socks," a very funky, almost seductive number, with Wanlass practically rapping over the instrumentation. The rest of the album continues along the same vein. Atomic Mint show off their chops during "Picnic," "No More," and "Cabbages and Kings." The pleasant acoustic tracks "Track Five" and "Milkman" highlight Wanlass' understated guitar skills. In addition, "Feather's Fortune," with its record scratching and nice bass work by Hermocillo, works very well toward the end of the record. The only downsides to the album may be "Hypnotize" and "Thread," which lack the same oomph as the rest of the album. However, they hardly take away from the piece as a whole. The group obviously knows how to play, and are not afraid to show it on record. Atomic Mint is a new face in an already wonderful indie rock market. They have gained another fan here, and they're pretty nice people too. They are starting to get some airplay in California, and for more information, go to http://www.atomicmint.com. You will not regret it, because their sound has a freshness that will stay with you for a while.

"...expertly constructed and performed... the band...lays down a heavy beat... Wanlass [is] a powerful guitarist and vocalist ...her vocals hit the operatic highs of Heart's Anne Wilson...such talent elevates Atomic Mint above the usual alt-rock crowd" -- Palo Alto Weekly

I had the pleasure of reviewing Atomic Mint demo in a 1999 issue. This group is still demanding attention. California grown, this band has just released their first full length CD. The quality of the CD is 200 times better than the demo. However the core of their music is basically unchanged. They have just become more seasoned musicians. Atomic Mint's Brianna Wanlass says that they do not want to be branded as "one narrow musical style". However I don't think that I can say it any better than I did the last time I listened to this talented group. Atomic Mint hypnotizes their audience with a house full of style, with their foundation in funk and building blocks of Rock, Blues and Jazz. It is now my turn to say that Nefarious will have to do without one more CD because this has a place in my CD collection. Nefarious Rating 5 out of 5 -Nefarious Music Magazine
