notes

Keith started playing the banjo in 1975. He got hooked on it from his Dad's 10-year experience with the instrument and through the Beverly Hillbillies. He formed his first band “Classic Grass” in 1977 with high school friends and worked almost every weekend through late 1980. The highlights of this period were an appearance on the NBC show Stuff in 1979 and several live radio performances.

Arneson joined "Mountain Laurel" in 1981 and stayed with them until 1986. Highlights of this period included the release of their first and only recording Swingin' and an appearance on Nashville Now in 1985. They were also featured as the opening act for "Asleep at the Wheel" and John Prine.

In 1986 he joined the "Dixie Ramblers" and performed with them as a regular member until 1993. The band released two recordings Original Bluegrass Selections and I'm Playin' Too in 1988 and 1991 respectively. They also had an appearance on the CBS program 48 Hours. " I still sit in with these guys from time to time," remembers Arneson, "and we do a yearly telethon for cerebral palsy each January in Calvert County, MD.

When banjo legend Bill Emerson retired in 1993, an audition was held for his position as banjoist in the United States Navy's Country/Bluegrass ensemble "Country Current." Keith took on this audition, passed and has been a member of this high profile group ever since.

"I still do workshops around the country and taught weekly from 1981 until 1992”, he says, "and I'm still a big fan of all types of music especially Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck, Miles Davis, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and many others too numerous to mention. I'm currently attempting to master the art of melodic clawhammer banjo, wish me luck!"

I bought this album at a bluegrass festival in Tacoma, WA a few years ago and I still listen to it regularly, particularly Hard Times. Mr. Arneson's version is the best you'll ever hear.

  • Brilliant!

As a beginner banjoist, I've been interested in the breadth of banjo music possibilities. Keith Arneson has gone a long way in showing me the versatility in Another Time, Another Place.

  • Solo rendition allows the talent to shine through!
    author: Patrick Smith

The solo allows the listener to hear each and every sound. The talent shines in this cd. Hope there will be another one soon.

  • An amazing talent - among the best of his generation.

I am convinced Keith has six fingers on his picking hand. Some of the licks he plays are beyond belief. And on this album, he displays the broad spectrum of his musical talent with songs like "Missing You," with its haunting strains, to the bouncing fun in "A Cat Named Dawg." This is one outstanding musician!

  • Wonderful style!

As a banjo student, I find this CD wonderful listening and inspirational. It simple makes me want to practice more and more. It was recommended to me by a master banjo player who told me I could learn a lot from it and he is absolutely correct!

  • Absolute Listening Pleasure

The best CD we've heard so far. Love Keith Arneson style of playing and compositions in particular the title track Another Time, Another Place.A pleasure to listen to such an accomplished solo clawhammer style artist. Also a good mix of traditional tracks on the cd like Grandfathers Clock.

  • Its a must have
    author: Mr West

Its a must have, and I agree, he is the best kept secret that I have ever heard.

  • Like butter melting on a piece of rye toast.

Keith's clawhammer stlye is gentle and melodic - reminiscent of his bluegrass stlye, but with a life all it's own. My personal favorite is "A Minor Consideration". It's always a pleasure to hear Keith play and this collection is certainly a treat. Way to go!

  • Mr. Arneson sets standards
    author: Don Jolley

Keith Arneson is (unfortunately) the best kept secret in bluegrass. His amazing work in the U.S. Navy Bluegrass Band is confident, beautiful, and always flawlessly placed, never overplayed nor underplayed. The complexity of his work is hidden by his seemingly effortless playing. Now Mr. Arneson tackles frailing... and is just dazzling in his performance. The double thumbing, the pulloffs, the slides... oh my. Every once in awhile I hear someone that makes me just want to lay my banjo down and walk away from it - Bela Fleck's album Perpetual Motion did that to me last. Keith Arneson's Another Time, Another Place has done it again. It is my opinion that Keith Arneson is easily among the finest banjo players I've ever heard, but above that the reputation of his gentle and humble character make him a role model of a musician, artist, and man. Though I've never met him I'm passing his name out to every bluegrass enthusiast I meet.
