The Anzanga Marimba Ensemble has been performing since 1987. From our home in Seattle, Washington we have toured extensively throughout North America. We recently participated in a cultural festival in Beijing, China.
Our name and music are inspired by several cultures throughout Africa. The word "Anzanga" comes from the ChiChewa language of Malawi and means "to our friends." Our repertoire is primarily drawn from the traditional and contemporary music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe, and also includes pieces from Mozambique, South Africa, Gambia, Guinea, and Zaire. Shinga Moyo is our fourth recording.
Our ensemble consists of eight marimbas (xylophones in various musical ranges) including three sopranos, three tenors, one baritone, and one bass, plus hosho (gourd shakers). The wooden keys of the instruments are tuned to the notes and intervals used at Kwanangoma College in Zimbabwe. The tuning reflects the music played in Zimbabwean society and is different than standard Western tuning. Resonators hanging below the keys amplify the sound, and a vibrating membrane in the resonator adds a buzzing noise that is essential to the Zimbabwean music aesthetic.
The musicians who play on Shinga Moyo are: Sheree Seretse (director), Lee Eddy, Dana Elkun, Christopher Halaska, Paul Henry, Zachary Norman, Karen Schraven, Veronica Waters, and Karen Weisser.
