notes

The Antipypr's legendary LIVE show, complete with The Dante's Local House Band has finally been captured for posterity. One full hour of frenetic energy, red-hot jamming, and on-stage mayhem featuring the Antipypr and his friends at their crazy best.

Neil Anderson, known to his friends as "The Antipypr," has been on the road since 1995 transforming audiences with unique, energetic interpretations of traditional and original Celtic and world music.

To say Anderson is versatile is something of an understatement.

Neil first appeared on the Celtic festival circuit as one of the original members of Seven Nations.

He has since gone on to play with some of the most highly regarded artists in the Celtic genre, such as Irish traditional music icons Paddy Keenan, John Whelan, and The Chieftains.

Neil has also toured with New York City's most irreverent Irish rock-n-roll legends, Larry Kirwan and Black 47.

Still, it's not unusual to find him in kilt and tie performing in a more traditional mode at special events, ceremonies, or even as a guest soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his US concerts, Neil has toured Canada and Scotland, playing over 100 shows a year with some of the top artists in Celtic music today.

"When you listen to the Antipypr, you have to suspend your sense of what 'should' be done with a set of 'pipes. Why, you ask? Because Neil 'the Antipypr' Anderson has moved well beyond what 'should' be done, and off into the realm of what can be done. His technique is flawless, his style singular, and when it comes to expression there's no one better at it."

My wife & I saw Rathkeltair (Neil Anderson, Nick Watson, Peter Kimosh, Trevor Tanner, and Victor Gagnon) at 2005 Pipes in the Valley in Hartford, CT. We were hooked immediately! Bought this CD as a result of that show... tracks #4 & #7 are simply unbelievable!!! Definitely intend to see them again & buy more CDs in the future.

  • the best musician in his class, totally at the top of his game

Reviews like this can be difficult because no self-respecting music writer likes to sound like a fan, fawning over a musician's abilities. Well, f*ck it, because I am fawning over NEIL on these, as he has totally delivered the goods. In case you don't know it, ANDERSON was the original piper for my current absolute favourite rock band, SEVEN NATIONS & earned his rep in those days as the best bagpipe player period. I have to admit that the 1st couple efforts he made after his 7N departure, with FULL CIRCLE, didn't light me up...there just seemed to be some fire missing & the songs weren't top shelf. That matter was put to rest with the release of his next solo CD, '99's killer "Dante's Local." Now, he has followed that with the awesome "Revenge...." If "Dante's..." was a thought-out, wonderfully constructed studio album, then "Revenge..." is a perfect companion. This very lengthy disc sees NEIL in the live format, totally letting loose & giving the kind of workout every fan of an instrument dreams to hear. This is like "Hendrix In The West" for guitar or Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" for drums. It's the best musician in his class, totally at the top of his game, ripping like there's no tomorrow, doing it for the obvious love of it. This is the Holy Grail for bagpipe lovers!
