That devastating combo of heartbreaking alt-country earnestness and perfect pop-hook craftsmanship is elusive, which makes the victory all the sweeter when a band in your own back yard nails it. Band Of Annuals are that band right now. (BF) City Weekly

notes

Band of Annuals is a hardworking 6-piece band from Salt Lake City, Utah. They formed almost three years ago, and quickly gained a reputation as one of the Intermountain West's best country folk outfits. Shortly after forming, Band of Annuals self released the album REPONDEZ, and then toured the pacific coast, and played shows in places as far east as Kansas. Their follow up disk, Live Warehouse EP, was called the best alt-country music to ever come out of Salt Lake City by local music publication SLUG Magazine. Their latest album, Let Me Live, was released in May of 2007. Let Me Live builds on many of the same themes as their earlier work, and even showcases studio versions of several tracks from last year's live record. The twelve songs melt seamlessly together, and demonstrate why many consider Band of Annuals major players in Utah's burgeoning country noir music scene. Band of Annuals has shared the stage with Magnolia Electric Co., Neko Case, Damian Jurado and many others. Their sound has been compared to bands like these, and this is at least somewhat accurate. They must be heard to be believed. Their music is flawlessly beautiful and substantially better than most of what has thus far emerged from outlaw, religious Utah’s musical repertoire. Bill Frost of Salt Lake's City Weekly described their music as a devastating combo of heartbreaking alt-country earnestness and perfect pop-hook craftsmanship. Let Me Live was record earlier this year with the help of Scott Wiley, who assisted on the Elliot Smith album Basement on a Hill. He has also worked with Ryan Adams, Tracy Chapman and others. There are current plans to once again tour California and the Pacific Northwest, and to play several shows in Utah and surrounding states. Catch their performance when they play your city; it will once again make you happy to listen to country music.

  • Great CD
    author: Michael Brown

I have both of the CDs this band has released. Let Me Live is a CD that the first time I heard it I played it again several times. It has stayed on my player since I opened it and will be there for a while longer. I would highly recommend this CD as the second in a series of what I hope will be many more from Band of Annuals.

  • Wonderful album

If you like Whiskeytown and the harmonies of Ryan Adams and Catlin Cary you'll like this cd. Awesome really. Go and buy it! Rita, Switzerland

  • You don't have to love country to love this album...but it doesn't hurt...
    author: Chip McCabe

My musical tastes are about as varied as you can imagine. I also don't tend to say things like "greatest this" or "best that" so when I tell you that this is easily the best record I've purchased in the last year take my word for it. Songs like "She's Not Angry" and "Lower" are so powerful and so full of raw, pure emotion that they will actually get you a bit misty-eyed and if they don't you have a cold, cold black heart. Please buy this record. You won't be disappointed.

  • Album of the year (No one else is near)

  • hit me like a rock to the head
    author: J B

I never saw this band coming. I grew up on punk rock, classic rock, and all other walks of rock. My tastes grew increasingly, but folk and country escaped me for quite some time. Then I heard Band of Annuals. They took me by storm, and I can't stop listening to the album. Great hooks, clear emotional vocals, perfectly orchestrated rhythms, and atmosphere to spare! Buy it. Don't think twice.

  • Let Me Live

Loved this cd!!!! Two of the best voices I've heard in years!

  • Good stuff
    author: Dave

A sound similar to Ryan Adam's band Whiskey Town, but better. Much much better. There are a lot of good Alt Country/Americana acts, but only a few great ones. I would definately add Band of Annuals to that list.

  • Let Me Live

I absolutely love this CD. Not a bad song on it. I was concerned when they were described as a country band, but Ryan Adams prepared me for the steel guitar :) and I'm a nut for strong vocals and especially with a woman harmonizing as well as these guys do.

  • I can't stop listening to this album
    author: Dainon

Let Me Live captures a Utah band that has already hit its prime, just two albums into its career. I'm not sure how they'll top the pretty melodies and perfectly roughed-up edges and Ryan Adams meets Gillian Welch harmonies that they have here, but I aim to stick around long enough to see them try. It sounds like a wholly modern classic, with enough rocking moments to not be labeled country and enough straight-up country turns to make mom and dad smile right along with you. Man, this one's tasty. Everybody ought to own a copy. I'm NOT exaggerating.
