notes
Then we segue into some cool jazz with Anna Horton in front of a small but sterling combo (Gus Smith, guitar, Clare Star, bass, Darren Novotny, percussion, and Jerry Yester, keys). Recorded at Willow Sound Studio, this is smooth as silk and cool as a spring breeze.
Anna Horton has a mellow alto voice with just the barest hint of a vibrato (which she has the good taste never to overuse). She covers eleven standards and makes them her own. She looks good too.
One might surmise that she has listened to a Billie Holiday record or two, but she is not by any means trying to copy Lady Day. No, she swings to her own beat.
This is easily one of the best albums I have heard this year (and I have listened to a lot).
