notes

The daughter of two schoolteachers, Angela taught herself to play piano in a house on twenty-four acres of evergreen forest in rural western New York State. Her unique brand of alt-indie piano pop was described by All Indie Radio as, "...right on the edge of jazz and Broadway, but[...]all dressed and ready to go as contemporary pop."

While studying vocal performance at NYU, she discovered that Gilbert and Sullivan wrote some wacky stuff, Puccini wrote songs that were impossibly hard to sing, and Wagner was probably not a very nice man. She also discovered that it was ultimately more fun to compose, so she began writing her own songs during the time that she was supposed to be practicing "Oh, dry the glist'ning tear".

The songs she began to write in hijacked college practice rooms became the foundation for her first album, "All About You". Recorded entirely at home, these eleven tracks include collaborations with some of the best musicians on the NYC music scene: Bill Campbell on drums, Ryan Scott on guitar, Dimitri Moderbacher on clarinet/sax, Marco Panascia and Mike Blanco on bass, and Andre Canniere on trumpet/flugelhorn. The songs deal with everyday issues like disappointment and gratitude, self-doubt and self-indulgence, but mostly they revolve around a burning desire to answer the eternal question, “What’s next?”

Now making the rounds in New York, Angela had her music featured on NPR, popular indie radio stations such as NextBigHit.com, Harris Radio and Radio Crystal Blue in NYC, and has performed at various NYC venues such as The Listening Room at Caffe Vivaldi, Rockwood Music Hall, The Cutting Room, Pete’s Candy Store, The C-Note and Alphabet Lounge. A recent review on TheRedAlert.com states, "If Tori Amos is the standard that all aspiring female piano pop artists will need to live up to, then Ortiz does not have a problem living up to these standards; in fact, she rises above them."

And she's just getting started.

  • WOW!

How often can you say you love EVERY song on an album? Every single song on All About You is great. I stumbled on Angela's music while looking for opera (since she's classically trained) and listening to her songs completely renewed my love of music, after not listening to much of anything for years. Now THAT's something! Have a listen and you will be hooked!

  • Didn't want to like it, but ended up loving it.

I normally don't go for 'girl at the piano' kind of music, but a friend brought me to a show of hers recently (@ Cafe Vivaldi in nyc) and I actually really liked it. The difference between her stuff and the stuff I was preparing not to like is that her stuff isn't too sappy. I like ironic lyrics, or lyrics that are kind of funny so I think that's why I bought this CD. It's definitely worth a listen, even if you're not really into this kind of sound normally.

  • Just stumbled upon this, but loved it!

I was just browsing through cdbaby and came upon this. Had to get it!! She is the kind of songwriter whose songs get better and better the more you listen to them, because there are so many layers to them. My favorites are Mr. Thomas and Everyone Changes, but all of the songs on this CD are really good.

  • CD is great, wearing it out playing it in my car.

Angela is an incredibly talented young woman. Besides having an amazing voice, she writes her own songs and accompanies herself on piano. How many artists can do that well? I love all the music on the CD but my favorites are Everyone Changes and Last of Who You Are. I hear them continue to play in my head after listening to the CD and I sing. Angela has a bright future with such a wonderful CD. Congratulations!

  • Gives Goose Bumps - Amazing Talent!!!

  • Astonishing!

Piano girl pop that isn’t as cheesy as you might imagine, “All About You” is melodic and methodical. Her songwriting is strong both lyrically and musically with waves of choruses that wash over you. Welcoming harmonies greet the ear seemingly at every turn and you quickly realize that her brand of indie piano pop is sure and true.
