notes
Andy began as a drummer for rock and roots bands. A predilection for songwriting led him to the guitar and, ultimately, the piano. He worked for several years as a DJ at WRVG - a progressive public radio station with an open musical format - earning high ratings and praise from other regional media. The variety in which Andy indulged on the air subsequently permeated his songwriting. He further developed his sound with a regular gig at a piano bar, forming a style infused with jazz, soul, funk, blues, and world music.
Illumination (2008) unites these elements with a pervading pop sensibility. Throughout the cd, catchy melodies complement a variety of stylistic explorations. The different settings are easily traversed by the backing band, which includes members of Club Dub and the Tallboys.
Illumination contains many ideas and colors, as much a culmination of experiences as it is a point of departure.
“…bossa nova tunes sit attractively next to New Orleans-flavored romps, finely chilled pop, and percussive, keyboard-driven reflections on Illumination…
-Lexington Herald-Leader
“…With Illumination, Mason finally steps up front to showcase his gifts as a pianist, vocalist, and arranger.”

Illumination
author: mdjnsn@insightbb.comThis is a SUPERB recording! Andy Mason really is the most incredible musician, singer, songwriter you will find. His smooth voice is a cross between James Taylor and Rufus Wainwright, and he delivers his well-crafted, jazz-influenced melodies beautifully. My favorite tracks this minute are the opener, “Fool Too Long” and “Illumination”. His lyrics are intelligent, balancing sweetness and sadness with subtle humor. Musically, his rock background has slowly given way to jazz, both traditional and New Orleans style. Wow. Excellent CD, Andy!
