Peter Anastos & Iter is a new group from the San Francisco Bay Area that premiered at the Montclair Jazz Festival in Oakland, CA in October, 2005. Since then the band has gone on to record original material composed by Anastos which is showcased in the band’s debut cd Iternity.
The Iter concept, developed by Anastos (it’s not that deep, folks), is a musical journey down the Roman road, or iter (common crossword clue), of jazz. The compositions are eclectic, ranging from the title cut, Iternity, which offers intertwined harmonies by the horns over a revolving foundation played by the rhythm section before bursting into a hard bop, to Carousel which starts as a child’s nightmare on the county fair’s carousel but ends in a smooth, flowing ride. The other selections, such as Leebarebop, which incorporates the influence of Lee Morgan with a funky, hip-hop rhythm and DeCoy, based on McCoy Tyner’s signature 70’s chord structures, illustrate Anastos’ versatile writing style.
The band features Anastos on trumpet, Nelson Braxton on acoustic bass, Andy Dillard on drums, Steve Erquiaga on guitar, Jason Martineau on piano, and Bryan McVicker on tenor and soprano saxes.

I like what I hear from Peter...
author: Bill M.Iternity: reminds me of the 50’s-60’s West Coast Jazz-LA-with Shelly Mann. I loved the glissandi? Trumpet solo very warm reminding me of what Jack Sheldon might have sounded like if he weren’t so fuzzy. I’m partial to the clear sound and enjoyed it. In this way it is some of the best playing I’ve ever heard from Peter. Nice to hear a brass player get better with age. I liked the smooth guitar solo. Decoy: Read where it was inspired by McCoy Tyner. Peter doing the East Coast sound. Great rhythm writing and tight ensemble playing. The keyboard solo stood out Child’s Play: This is a more complex chart than the first 2, Nice piano and soprano sax solos. Enjoyed the muted trumpet with the ensemble. Nice relaxed feel and good balance. Carousel: I haven’t been following jazz for years but there is a lot here I’ve never heard before. Very nice rhythm-especially the play back and forth between 3 &4 meters. The complexity has sucked me in. I’m definitely going to listen to this again and again and each time will hear things I missed. Walkin’ To The Norm: All right! Funk and stuttering in blues. I am always a sucker for a blues/soulful tune like this. Johnny Griffin would be proud. Nice ending. On The Brink: I like the energy in this chart. Great guitar licks. Bass drums and piano keeping the tempo steady and driving. Great bluesy piano solo. If this chart didn’t get back to the root key who cares it has a nice groove.
