notes

Rock. Country. Folk. Americana. Amy Speace & The Tearjerks blend it like Jersey City sludge. Like a more urban Emmylou with a pissy streak, Amy added her band of boys, The Tearjerks, and recorded her newest offering "Songs For Bright Street" (Wildflower Records, May 2006) in a Hoboken recording studio housed behind an old homing pigeon club. This is an album that doesn't care what bin it lands into. The lyrics mix the blunt and the poetic and lay on a hooky melodic bed. From the edgy rant of "Not The Heartless Kind" to the AAA sunshiney "Step Out of the Shade" to the pared down old timey "Two" (a duet w/ The Jayhawks' Gary Louris) to the all out wail of "Shed This Skin", "Bright Street", produced by Tearjerks' lead guitar player James Mastro (The Bongos, Health & Happiness Show, Ian Hunter), is a great ride. Amy Speace has played with Alejandro Escovedo, Ian Hunter, Little Feat, Steve Forbert, Judy Collins, Catie Curtis, Rosie Flores and Ricky Skaggs, among others. Released in Europe in November 2007, "Bright Street" made the Top 10 of many critics "Best of 2007" lists in the UK, Germany and Scandinavia.

  • Awesome!

My first introduction to Amy Speace and the Tearjerks. Absolutely found the CD Amy Speace: Songs For Bright Street an edgy sound with a twist of angst that makes me want to scream YEAH! especially Not the Heartless Kind. I also enjoy the soulful side of the folk music and the guitar work is out of this world. Brilliant!

  • Well worth the price of admition

  • Finally a CD as good as Amy is!

It's a rockin' little record I want my jockey to play (as Chuck Berry would say). This CD showcases Amy at her best, in fine voice, great songwriting, with tasteful contributions from her road band and friends. Amy plays with great musicians -- James Mastro playing Joe Perry-ish rock guitar, Rich Feridun channeling James Burton and Scotty Moore, Matt Lindsey and Jagoda laying down hot but understated rhythm. Get this record! You will not be disappointed.
