HEALING MUSIC FROM THE HEART

"Her voice is so clear"
BURL IVES

"Her music reflects her influences . . . James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles.
Strong musicians, but moreover strong songwriters. This describes Amy's music to a tee."

-IMPS JOURNAL of Independent Music Producers Syndicate

"Throughout time, the voices of the muses have driven humans to raise their voices in song. Passion for life has guided arists and visionaries to create their dreams for everyone to share. Amy Hindman has added her voice to those who envision a better future for humankind and all of our Earth Mother's children. May these songs touch each of your hearts as well."

The following review appeared in Dirty Linen Issue #49 - December/January '93-94.

Amy Hindman Beneath the Surface {Kamaya Productions 007 (1992)} Amy Hindman takes a chance with her debut release, Beneath the Surface, revealing, as she does, intense and personal hurts while asserting the alchemical process of awareness. Feminist by example, songs like "Solo" - with Suzi Schadle's bass flute playing around Hindman's clear vocal - - offer freedom through enticing images of the Pacific Northwest. "Prayer for My Child," an apologetic and belated goodbye, is crisply sad, uplifted with juxtapositions of natural beauty and human loss. Grieving is done, and with an ease grappled from serious private soul-searching, in "The Gift . . . for Karleen." "Deep Therapy" emerges as if from a diary selection: unrelentingly honest, purifyingly true. That freedom, arrived at by working through pain, is the ultimate gift of this deceptively plain and simple cassette. (LP)

"I believe that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. My music is an expression of my journey on this earth walk, created through the challenges and blessings that have formed who I am today. As I ever expand, grow, and open to the Mystery, I will not be the same tomorrow. We are, each one of us, creating a beautiful symphony with our lives. Blessings on your journey!"

Amy Hindman Bio / History

Amy was born in Davenport, Iowa, and is the youngest of 5 children. She grew up living all over the world. Her father (Lloyd), was a Presbyterian minister, and he and her mother (Bertha), moved with their family to Seoul, Korea when Amy was 5. Her father had an interest in a ministry to servicemen overseas, as he knew what it was like to be away from loved ones during World War II, where he served as a Naval Chaplain aboard the USS Denver in the South Pacific. It was important to her parents to create a “safe harbor” for such military personnel overseas.

After 3 years in Seoul, the family moved to New York City for 6 months, and then to Denton, Texas for 5 years. When the family was returning from Seoul, Korea, they traveled throughout the world, knowing this may be the only opportunity they would have to do this. Amy has profound memories of certain places that touched her, such as Jerusalem, and Calcutta, India. She was exposed to poverty, pain and suffering in a way that she would have not seen had she stayed in Denton, Texas.

When Amy was entering 6th grade, her mother died of cancer. This experience, obviously, changed her life forever. She remembers when she was 11, that this would probably be the most painful experience of her life. She also knew on a very deep level, that this would also be the greatest gift of her life. She learned about loss, grief and pain at a very young age, making her compassionate and sensitive to the pain of others.

The family then lived in Bangkok, Thailand and Amy attended the International School of Bangkok, which was at that time, the largest International School in the World. She graduated from Ft. Collins High School in Colorado, and went to Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Secondary education.

The Hindman family was very musical, giving Amy a rich background in music, singing and playing guitar. Everyone sang and played various instruments, like the piano, flute, guitar, violin, baritone horn and drums. Amy’s first instrument was the ukulele, and the very first song she learned on it was “Tom Dooley”. She then moved on to the Beatles songs and loved their music and still does!! Her major influences have been: The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Karla Bonoff, Jennifer Warnes, Simon and Garfunkel, Julie Andrews, John Denver, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Shawn Colvin and others. She loved musicals as a child, mainly The Music Man, South Pacific, West Side Story, and Oklahoma.

Her music is a rich portrait of all of these amazing life experiences!
