PROG-ROCK FOR SHORT ATTENTION SPANS
Mandible is an Austin, Texas-based quintet known for its wry humor, hard pop/art rock ways and unpredictable live shows. The band has fun with time signatures and whiplash stylistic changes, and sometimes shows up to the gig dressed in bird suits or as failed superheroes, but Mandible fans aren’t just responding to the spectacle of it all. Everyone’s listening because the band has great songs, gorgeous harmonies and complex arrangements that keep you guessing. And they just flat kill onstage.
THE ALBUM
(Here Come The) Mandible was recorded at Austin’s Adult Audio Megaplex and Industrial Oaks studios over the last several years. Grand Champeen's Michael Crow co-produced the fourteen tracks with Mandible’s Phillip McEachern, and the disc is being released by Almost There Records on May 15, 2007. The record release show will take place at the Hole in the Wall in Austin on May 18, 2007.
BAND PERSONNEL AND HISTORY
Over the last decade, Mandible keyboardist, lead singer, and main songwriter Phillip McEachern has quietly developed a reputation as one of the key anti-heroes of the Austin indie rock scene, and a composer of über-melodic, cantankerous tracks. His previous work includes the solo albums Fried Fish (1998), Chirp (1996) and Get No Kicks (1995), and the bands FantazmaGordo and The Diaz Brothers. McEachern also serves as keyboardist for other Austin artists, including Ramsay Midwood.
Additional members of the band include Robert Bernard (lead guitar, vocals), known for his work with The Damnations and Prescott Curlywolf, and as a member of the late, legendary Shreveport/Dallas post-punk band Picket Line Coyotes; Dylan Jones (bass), who also plays with world music group Atash and founded the well-respected music education nonprofit Anthropos Arts; Tim Kinard (guitar, trumpet, vocals), another member of Prescott Curlywolf, who has a PhD in Education and teaches at Texas State University; and two drummers who alternate duties – Karl Lundin of LOUDEST, Boom Bah Yea, and Viper Horse, and Conrad Choucroun who has played with prominent touring artists including The Damnations, Kelly Willis, and Jon Dee Graham. A detailed band history can be found at www.wikimmunity.org/wiki/index.php?title=Mandible.
Mandible has previously appeared on Almost There’s three compilations: Who And Who in 2004 (with a cover of Tommy’s "Cousin Kevin"), Turn 1 in 2005 (with "Rubber Pants," from the new record) and Turn 2 in 2006 (with "Underwhelmed," also from the new record).
