Allyssa pours her funky-jazzy-pop sound over smart poetry.

notes

Allyssa Jones has multiple-musicality syndrome. Her debut CD, "Daughter's Dance," reveals traces of her family's eclectic record collection, which included everything from Carole King and James Taylor to The Temptations and Earth, Wind & Fire. Although trained in classical piano and voice, it was her later introduction to jazz that would inspire her core sound and artistic aesthetic. Add to all of this her passion for neo-soul and Prince, and it becomes clear why she insists on blending the styles that speak to her most.

While cutting her teeth in Chicago, Allyssa's jazz dates featured sought-after players such as Steve Million and Neal Alger. In 2000, Bradley Parker Sparrow, an early supporter, invited her to appear in Southport Records' annual "Women of Southport Jazz Festival." As a songwriter, Jones' compelling melodies and poignant lyrics earned her honors in the 2004 Billboard International Songwriting Competition.

Now based in Boston, Allyssa was named one of Boston Magazine's "40 Bostonians to Watch" in 2002. Her belief in the movement to add new material to the Great American Songbook is the driving force behind her band's innovation and energy. Popular at both jazz and original music venues, Allyssa Jones is available for shows and promotional events wherever audiences are craving something new.

  • A wonderful collection of heartfelt songs spanning several genres
    author: Robert F. English

This collection by Ms. Jones shows that she is equally comfortable in jazz, bluesy funk, and ballads. Her rich, warm alto voice lends itself well to these songs, mostly her own (catchy) originals, although two others are covered admirably, including a snappy funk-feel setting of "Lover Man". The very able backing musicians, including her fellow Boston Arts Academy faculty member Greg Holt on bass, paint a widely varied palette of colors and textures to set off the artist's voice. My personal favorite is the title tune, penned by Jones herself.

  • My ears was pin and waited to hear the next word...

My ears were pin and waited to hear the next word...as I listen to the music. I wish the CD was created in a roller coaster type of way-slow and fast music would come on consecutively. A few slow songs, two lovers' type of CD. It is nice to hear musical artists writing and playing with substance.

  • Awesome

This is an incredible CD featuring some great tunes. There's an interesting mix of styles--each track takes you to a different place that is filled with energy. The 5 original tunes...WOW! I can't get 90 Days out of my head (in a good way!) And Allyssa's cover of Lover Man had me lovin' it from the first beat. Great new interpretation of an old standard. The only dissapointment is that it's only 7 tracks long. I would have liked twice that many.

  • Daughter's Dance is refreshingly soulful and truly original.
