It was during a trip to California in 1992 that I first caught the Alleycat Scratch live experience and was blown away right from the off. 4 members with jet black hair and killer tunes took over the stage for a short set that bled glamour, attitude, energy and songs to die for.

Although the band had originally formed as a five-piece in San Francisco in 1988, it was their relocation to Los Angeles that helped spur the band on to bigger and better things. Original members Justin Sayne Pearce, Tommy Haight and Mike Joyce had waved goodbye after the first couple of demo recordings and a mass of headlining performances at the Stone, Omni, and One Step Beyond (ask Boa to tell you about the time they played with Classy Trash and pranked them by putting chickens and fish-heads onstage sometime - ew!), with Michael Michelle taking over the role of vocalist, joining Devin Lovelace on guitar, Bobby 'Boa' Dias on bass and Robbi Black on drums. With supports to MCA Recording artists Pretty Boy Floyd and fun shows with the likes of fellow riot stars Glamour Punks, the dedicated and hard-working Alleycat Scratch boys were rising from the gutters, turning heads, making friends and winning over new fans quickly and constantly with their addictive and entertaining cat scratch fever. Ex-Resurrection Mary frontman Eddie Robison was the final piece to the puzzle, bringing a harder-edged and more soulful vocal style and professional approach taking over from Michelle. From then on there was no looking back. The four-piece recorded 'Deadboys In Trash City', their debut full-length album released on their own Kick Your Cat record label, to an anxiously awaiting fanbase in 1993 (by this time the band even had a quarterly fanzine published in England devoted to them - named 'Plastic Dolls', after one of the band's songs - read by many from all over the world). A sold-out record release party at the Troubadour was the icing on the cake and soon came press from around the globe including a 3-page article in top UK weekly rock magazine, Kerrang! and worldwide CD distribution. Everyone wanted a piece of the Alleycat pie.

Sadly, in 1994 suddenly that scary thing known as the 'Grunge' movement took over the world and the glam/sleaze scene wilted and died a death. With bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden dominating the charts, it didn't leave much hope for our fave trash cats from California. An oft postponed (and eventually cancelled) European tour was the final straw for the band that could have been so much more. The band split and Eddie, Devin, Boa and Robbi went their separate ways, after one final packed out show at The Roxy Theatre in LA. The memory of Alleycat Scratch lives on to this day though, with copies of the original sold-out 'Deadboys In Trash City' even selling for up to $150 on Ebay. With 'Deadboys...' being so in demand, and not wanting their fans to have to shell out heaps of money on auction sites, the band have now decided to re-release the CD, 13 years after its initial launch, with two bonus tracks and a DVD comprised of live footage and extra goodies. So whether you were there back in the day or whether you're just discovering the band this time around, take a bite out of this. And enjoy.

  • excellent band, excellent cd

i first started listening to alleycat scratch during their early days, and i feel that if the seattle bands would not have polluted the airwaves with their so-called music which actually sucked that alleycat scratch would have easily been an instant hit, if you listen closely they have a sound just like fellow glam rockers poison and dokken.

  • If you like metal with crunch...this is it!

This cd rocks from begining to end. Any 80's metal collector must have this for their collection. 2 thumbs up.
