It doesn't seem so long ago... Little Carnie and Wendy Wilson, joining their Dad, Brian, on the stage of a jam-packed arena, grabbing microphones and leading the audience in the sing-along, Gotta keep those lovin' good vibrations a-happenin' with you.

Matt Jardine, with little prompting from Papa Al, tentatively walking on stage to play a pair of congas that stood about as tall as he did.

And now its come full circle. With the recent passing of Carl Wilson, The Beach Boys' story has entered a new phase, and founding member Al Jardine has chosen to keep the spirit of the music alive with the help of some young performers who instinctively know their way around this music because, quite frankly, they were born into it: Matt and Adam Jardine, and Carnie and Wendy Wilson.

The first rehearsals in late 1998 were a revelation. Al was onto something good. He recalls, "Oh it was magic... I could feel that young energy very similar to that energy we experienced when we got together in 1961 as The Beach Boys. It was the same vibrant energy."

To give the voices the solid support they deserve, Al recruited some of the finest players he could find, including several veterans of The Beach Boys' road band.

Under the musical direction of Billy Hinsche, Al Jardine, Family & Friends took the familiar songs to a new place without sacrificing any of the intangible qualities that made the Beach Boys' renditions so special.

It was new. It was fresh. Rolling Stone said: "The voices blend into a harmony that often takes on a life of its own."

In November 1999 they took their California Saga to Nevada and showered the audiences with their sun-drenched harmonies. Outside the showroom it may have been a typical Vegas night - the never-ending neon nighttime of The Rat Pack and The Dedicated Gambler - but inside, Al and his Family and his Friends turned back time and took us on a journey to a picture-perfect California day.

Familiar hits had everyone singing along in word-perfect unison (as they always do.)

Brian Wilson standards took on a whole new life with the added dimension of his daughters' beautiful voices.

And for devoted Beach Boys fans the inclusion of seldom heard and wonderfully performed rarities like "Wild Honey," and "Break Away" made each performance an Evening To Remember.

And at the center of it all stood Al, looking like he was having more fun onstage than he'd had in years.

Backstage, Virginia (Mom) Jardine watched the show and smiled, and remembered the day back in 1961 when she took a chance on her son Al and his friends Brian, Carl, Dennis, and Mike, and gave them the $300 they needed to rent the instruments for that first, fateful recording session. Thanks, Mom!

It was a great show. I know. I was there. Now it's your turn.

    If Beach Boys is your thing, and why shouldn't it be, this album, by one of that band's founding members, Al Jardine, is the recommended prescription. Here, Al, with the help of friends and family, deliver stunning remakes of classics like 'In My Room', 'Darlin', 'Wild Honey', 'Good Vibrations', 'Help Me Rhonda' and others. This they do without losing touch with the original flavour, but the neat thing is that they do it while bringing a fresh new perspective to the songs many of us grew up with, songs we came to know and love as anthems of a generation when music was music, with strong melody, fun to listen to (and sing along to - hey, you could remember the lyircs) while being able to touch us heart and soul the way a good song should. The Beach Boys were noted for blended harmonies. Ah, you already know that, don't you? Well, you should! Whatever the case, the same can be found here. The energy level of the performances on this wonderful CD are as breathtaking (rejuvenating) as it was first time we (those of us who are old enough to remember) heard it. This is not your typical dry dull remake. Al Jardine and friends deliver the songs with as much passion as if the songs had just been written now. The new arrangements do justice to each and every song. Add this CD to your collection. You'll never want to get rid of it!

    Being based in Scotland I've never had the chance to catch Al but this live CD makes up for that. Lively, exuberant versions of the classics we all know and love performed and sung well by Family & Friends. Recommended to all BW?BB fans

    The songs have never sounded better. Al is great and the band is the same band that backed up the original Beach Boys for many years. And it's so great to hear "Sail On Sailor" played live with Billy Hinsche and Bobby Figeroa singing. And along with Ed Carter and the Wilson sisters, Al has created a great live Beach Boys Music CD.     This CD is proof of who is truly carrying on the legacy of The Beach Boys. Al is doing a much better job of singing the songs than Mike ever did. Plus Al is the only one who never ventured into a solo career while he was still a Beach Boys member. It is pathetic to go to a Beach Boy concert and hear other people singing the songs made famous by Al, Carl, Dennis, and Brian. Thumbs up to Al Jardine.

I have always wanted to see Al's group, and having this disc, just makes me want to see them more! Great band, great vocals and it's real nice to hear more than the hits. Also, with "California Energy Blues", Al continues the tradition of writing a great song every few years. I only wish he would write, record & release more often!

Al & Friends deserve some credit for resurrecting some obscure gems from the Beach Boys' catalog, in addition to the standards.     Al Jardine and Co. have given these great songs a new spirit. As a hard core Beach Boys fan since 1962 I couldn't have been more pleased. These aren't just rehashed oldies- they're bright new renditions that have all those harmonies we have loved all these years. This is better than Brian's Live at the Roxy. Bravo, Al!

    Hello fans worldwide, I ordered this CD on saterday and expected 3 weeks of delivery to my country Holland. To my big surprise the CD arrived on thursday: very very excellent. The CD was welcomed by my other 60 + Beach Boys CD's as a new masterpiece. This is with Brian's live album the best Beach Boys material ever. Al is absolutely great what a voice, the other four you're the new Fab Four to me. I wish some more rarities where included, eliminating the car medley. Pick out for example the 1989 'Still Cruisin' album and Al has a great song 'Island Girl' and the list goes on and on. The Beach Boys are more to me than the 1960s. So please continue forever. Wouldn't it be nice: Mike, Bruce, this band, Brian and the Wondermints all together. Thanks for this fantastic show. Closer: 'California Energy Blues' is nice to hear some new music showing the composing qualities haven't faded.

    I ordered the CD the day it became available.I am EXTREMELY impressed and HIGHLY recommend the CD for any Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan!The vocal blend of Al,his sons and Brian's daughters is AWESOME!Not to mention the additional vocals and instrumentation of Billy Hinsche and several of the former Beach Boys touring musicians!I hope Brian has a chance to hear this CD,as I think he'll be mighty proud of the way his daughters sing his songs,as well as his old friend and his sons.There is a great chemistry in the band,a lot of enthusiasm,and a youthfulness brought about by the second generation Beach Boys family.And I think that's the key,they sound like family singing together,which gives it that true Beach Boys feel.They sound like they were born to sing the songs,and I believe they were!I think its wonderful that Al and company have so much respect for the music as to present it in such a way.Al has always been very serious about his music and it shows!

    I just finished listening to this CD and had to tell people that the energy in this CD is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!. Everybody on performing seems to have been having a fantastic time and really enjoyed playing the concert.     What a fun CD! From the first beat of the base drum on Dance Dance Dance, I knew I made a great purchase (two actually ... had to get a copy for my brother, John, too). Great songs, awesome performance ... you can hear the love and respect of the original music in every note ... it's the best of the songs we grew up with, combined with great new, but still familiar-sounding, voices. Al, you and the guys rock ... and to the Wilson girls, you give me goose bumps. Can't wait for the next one!

    Ever since Al formed the "Family and Friends" band, I've looked forward to hearing their music. The wait was well worth it! This CD is fabulous. A combination of incredible talent and time honored music makes for a sweet listening experience. Hearing my old favorites with a new spin is a real delight. I only hope we see many more follow on albums by this fabulous group. :-)

    I've had the chance to listen to this album and all I can say is WOW! The magic is back! Al, along with Wendy, Carnie, Matt, Adam, and the fantastic backing players infuse such spirit into this music that you are left wanting more! I can only hope that there is a follow up studio disc in the near future. If you are a Beach Boys fan you will love it. If you are not a Beach Boys fan you will love it! You can't help but love this CD! Did I mention that I love it?
