Urban folkster tales of travel and ghosts and trash day, literally

notes

It’s a good thing that summertime in Seattle lasts through September. Here in the Pacific Northwest we are used to strange weather patterns, and we have come to expect quite a different thing out of late summer than many people around the country. Where other places become muggy, stormy, buggy and hot, Seattle is, well, perfect. 2007 has been a little strange, the rain and the clouds lasting further into summer than we’d all hope, but lately the outlook has been bright and sunny.

Late summer is also bringing us the release of Ali Marcus’ fourth record on Turtle Rock Records, The Other Side (8/28/07). Written mostly during the recording and production of Miles and Miles and Miles, released earlier this year, The Other Side is a record in the truest sense. It is a documentation of moments, placed together because in one way or another, they all spell arrival. From the arrival of one’s own conclusions, (“Yours or Mine”) to the arrival of life’s certainties (“Free”) or the arrival at your front door (“The Beauty, The Terror”), all fifteen tracks of The Other Side have crossed the threshold.

Ali has been playing shows and festivals all over the Northwest this summer, including the Tractor Tavern, the Experience Music Project, the Ajax Café, and both the Northwest Folklife Festival and the Yakima Folklife Festival. The release of The Other Side will take her to New England for the month of October – catch a show at Googies (the Living Room upstairs) in New York, Vox Pop in Brooklyn, the Red Door in Portsmouth, the Basement in Northampton, the Abbey Lounge in Boston, and several other places along the way.

KCSN debuted the record in LA in early August, and Seattle stations KEXP and KBCS have also been spinning tracks. The album was recorded live and in full takes with Bubba Jones at contactcreate studios, in a converted barn in Snohomish, WA.
