    These songs by Alexi are amazing. They are performed with such passion that you can't help but let them speak to you. "Orange Sky" is such a beautiful song. The album while short is wonderful, relaxing and engaging all at the same time. It's full of music that reaches out and gently pulls you in. Terrific.

    This CD is just fantastic. I wasn't sure whether or not to buy it as I had only heard a couple of his songs and don't have much money! But it was a bargain and I loved what I'd already heard. I'm SO glad I did! I've had it on repeat since I got it, everyone I've played it to has loved it! All four songs are wonderful. Beautifully written lyrics, stunning melodies and harmonies.     The four songs that Alexi has put together on this CD are simple beautiful. Alexi, with his carefully formed words and simple but wonderful guitar playing are absolutely stunning. A good song gets your foot tapping--a great song moves you to a higher place. These are great songs and they represent some of the best music I have haard in a very, very long time. This one is a keeper.

    I tried to resist this CD for as long as possible. The only song I had heard was Orange Sky and, while I thought it was a great song (BTW - it won song of the year on KMTT's (Seattle) New Music Throwdown in 2004), I thought the excitement around the CD was a bunch of hype. No longer. I can't stop listening to it. It's been out for a while and it still sounds fresh.

    I really miss hearing music of this quality, almost everthing on the air is so lamentable, but this EP is extraordinary and unforgettable. I enjoyed every second of this 4 song EP, and can only wish there was more. Still I'm happy these were so well done, and would not have wanted more just for filler. The smooth musical delivery, great vocal and excellent lyrics reminds me of the joy of listening to the beatles at the height of their talent. I hear traces of Judy Collins, Donovan, and a dozen others, but this sound is distinct and unforgettable. Orange Sky is the song that sticks in my head and won't go away.

    Incredable. I was left speachless after I finished the album for the first time. The songs captivate you, make you think... and, unfortunalty, that's a rare thing in society today. I personally adore the song "Blue Mind". The melodic strumming of the guitar mixed with the hypnotizing rhythim really make for a wonderful song. Wow... lot's of adjetives. But no matter how many adjetives I use, I'll never be able to fully describe the sheer glory of this album. It's... well, hypnotizing. In a very good way. You will love it. _Peace

    I give them a five star rating for having the most money in the world... Everyone with half a brain knows that they pay for their albums...the public didn't buy these records, Alexis's family or a rich investor paid for 50 thousand copies to be sold as an investment. I heard that other famous people have done the same thing in these troubled times. All these best sellers have one thing in common; rich investors...and / or a rich family. I heard that one guy had his family buy 100 thousand dollars worth of albums to make it appear as though he was getting popular. It is called hype and these people are not more popular, they are paying for popularity. I give them 5 stars for having the most money..that goes for all the big sellers. They all are boring and weak artists... anyone with half a brain would be able to figure this out. Cd Baby doesn't like honesty.

    I bought this on a whim from another website, and it has become one of my favorite cds, despite its frustratingly short play time. Mr. Murdoch's full length album is out now, and I will be buying it no questions asked, simply based on these four songs. This album has a very simple sound; it is clean and has just the right amount of polish. Orange sky is the highlight of the album, but I never find myself skipping the preceding songs to reach it.

    Listening to WFUV driving in to the city I heard Orange Sky. The melodies are haunting, lyrics beautiful; "my salvation lies in your love" has had me connect with three former relationships. I realized that having them be complete and present to love in their life, rather than be left with what went wrong, is access to freedom / peace / salvation. I have share the CD with others who have also been inspired.

    “Four Songs,“ which was initially pressed at a limited edition of 40,000 copies, is now in its final run. This limited edition EP is the first available music from the London-born and presently Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter Alexi Murdoch. I had the honor of coming across this masterpiece of fine works recently and it is highly recommended as the best investment of 2006 while it is still available. Murdoch does a great deal with imaginative chords and adds certain truths to the lyrics in all of the songs. If any music EP could be chosen as a way to recover from hectic days, calm jarring nerves and give rebirth to the mind, “Four Songs” would indeed be the one. Creativity, inspiration, and individualism set off this creative works that help keep folk music alive and refreshing. Though all the tracks are well-written and performed on “Four Songs,” the strongest cut on the EP would be “Orange Sky,” which was also featured on The OC. It is a touching, calming and relaxing piece and the lyrics, like the other songs, tend to reach out and speak to the listener. While it lasts, “Four Songs” is definitely a must-have on anyone’s music list, whether one is a fan or folk music or not. The only complaint about this album is that it is too short; Murdoch has much potential for a full length works in the future. And if this is any indication of what he can produce for even the most discriminating music fan, he and his feel-good music can go places with future works. I for one will be looking forward to his next project.

    This CD is great! The music is so simple and yet it's equal to or even better than what a dressed up song sounds like. Meaning, there aren't any over the top riffs or outragious chord changes.     Four Songs is a great cd, good for the local coffee house where you just want to submerge yourslef with friends and spirits, or decide to drive for an extra 20 minutes or so just so you can have a more sublime experience listening to it. The songs are placid yet powerful, catchy without sacraficing creativity, and the chord changes ring nicely throughout the whole cd. Think if Damien Rice and Nick Drake had a son, Alexi would be him! His performance was mesmerizing and this CD is a reflection of that performance. My only regret is that there are only four songs - but, then again quality is far more important than quantity.     Although there are only four songs on this EP, I can't seem to stop playing it! Alexi's voice, the lyrics, and the soothing guitar melt me every time. I could die happy listening to him sing "song for you." I found out about Alexi Murdoch through the Damien Rice messageboard and it has been the most rewarding reccomendation I have taken! The songs on this cd stay with you long after it stops playing.

    From the opening notes of "It's Only Fear," you know exactly what you're going to get from Alexi Murdoch's debut EP, simply entitled Four Songs: simple acoustic (with some minor accompaniment) songs with oh-so-earnest lyrics of self-discovery. Exactly the kind of thing that I'm getting really burned out on--especially since I became a music reviewer and everybody that owns a guitar is releasing an album these days. Am I the only person that thinks that "Orange Sky" is getting way too overplayed on independent radio? I don't mind the occasional long song but at least say something interesting or have some amazing music. "Orange Sky" takes over six minutes to get to its point, mostly because Murdoch continually repeats his one-line chorus over and over again. "Blue Mind" is nice, especially that strumming and patting of the guitar rhythm. There is some banjo that peeks in occasionally, and Murdoch's Scottish lilt comes into play a little bit, even though I think he's trying to hide it most of the time. "Song for You" is probably the best song here. The genuineness that grates on the other tracks is delivered here with a smoothness that belies its origins. Also, the level of instrumentation increases throughout to make it more intense throughout its relatively short (for this record) running time. It's really a sweet song that I respond to emotionally.

    Hi Alexi: I bought your album on-line from CDBaby in Portland, Oregon (one of my favourite cities although I'm from Eastern Canada) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I read about you in Paste Magazine, thought you sounded interesting and downloaded the 4 songs from your CD. By the end of the 2nd song, I was blown away and ordered the CD from the folks above (neat store, neat web, altogether nice customer PR). About 3 weeks after receiving the CD (I did not play it immediately), I got an e-mail from the CDBaby folks asking if it had arrived OK and would I like to post a review of the album on their website because, among other things, the artist would appreciate it. I have a friend whom I shall refer to throughout as R (he thinks this whole thing may be detrimental to his career (just joking), who is a musician (multi guitars, good music sense, plays regularly with friends). He and I get together regularly-occasionally in my basement where I have an excellent sound system and do a critical listen to music that I've come across in my travels across the spectrum (I have about 9000 classical albums, thousands of CD's both popular, comedic, rock, classical or just plain weird...I like good music whether it's good rap, heavy metal, rock, opera, chamber...etc.....). We have good times together (known each other for more years than we're counting) and frequently disagree on many things, ...the music included. So, having been invited to submit thoughts on the music I received, we went ahead and subjected your "Four Songs" to our little committee and, seeing as I had been invited, submit the following for your perusal, enjoyment, pleasure ...whatever (I should mention, and I will tell the CDBaby people that there is no "WRITE A REVIEW" tab on the stated web page so this won't go to them except as a copy). (These critiques are from notes made just after listening to each track; I had heard the album once before (albeit on mp3), R had not.) I'm C. "It's Only Fear" C: Music is consistently interesting; instrumentation inventive especially the piano at the end which added a welcome sparkle to an otherwise dark song. The "symphonic" episode was pandering to taste. Message of hope through self-knowledge forcefully if mellowly made. R: Good production quality. AM is a very good guitar player and the instruments are high quality ("He's using expensive shit.") This song, however is a ballad and unlike somebody like Chris Isaak, AM is not a balladeer. "Orange Sky" R: "a classic". The line "my salvation is in your love" is so true and foundational to our human existence... [C's note: R had a soul-cleansing experience while this was playing...] C: A wonderful bounce top the music encased in a glorious sound field...a great aural experience. A brotherhood/love song..."My mind is too strong to carry on". I agree about R's "classic" status (with us, that's anything that merits/gets a mark of 8.0 or higher...out of 10). "Blue Mind" C: intricate rhythmic beat that begins this song leads to feelings of exhilaration at the crescendo (wish there had been more contrast to highlight the pinnacle of the song). I had a great time listening to this and was heard at the end to exclaim at the "Fuckin' great song!". R: A "lesser" message than the previous song = a "lesser" song "Song For You" C: The dark theme of drug use and death (suicide) was a little hard to take after the exuberance of the previous one but the spare instrumentation and simplicity of it, drew me in. I liked it a lot. R: [C's note: as the last song on the EP, R commented on this song and gave his view of the mini-album as a whole.] "On this song he exposed himself." Guitar plays one sound only...4 songs are ok but if you had to listen to more, would you get tired of the same sound, the same approach??? Worrisome because here is a person with obvious talent who is in danger of becoming locked in a limiting style and soundscape.

    ok so, orange sky hooked me the first time i heard it, and stuck in my head for a good long while. everytime i heard it, i immediately felt at home. it is true- his voice does break your heart a little, but in that really satisfying "this is all for the betterment of the world" sort of way. i highly reccommend using this cd as your wake up music, if you do, your days will be cozy and good.

    I've been haunted by the song Orange Sky for a few months that it has had airplay on the radio station I listen to (WXRV 92.5 Portsmouth, NH).     It's not just good, it's beyond good. At first I was disappointed that there were only four songs, but each song is so unique and takes you on such a different journey, it feels like much more than 4. Alexi's lyrics speak to the feelings that we have but are afraid to put words to. Thank you for your honesty and your beautiful fingers.     I think this album is an indication of the great things to come from Alexi Murdoch. I was floored when I read that this was a demo put together quickly for Nic Harcourt's show. In fact, I couldn't physically let go of it long enough to loan it to my roommate, she had to come sit in my room for a listening session.     I was just checking headlines on the CNN website when I saw one about an artist who rejected a huge major label deal. I wanted to know more about this artist, who turned out to be Alexi Murdoch. Based on that article and the other reviews here at CD Baby (which was also mentioned in the article), I took a chance on this disc. I wasn't too worried, since I am a big fan of acoustic singer-songwriters like Chris Whitley, Damien Rice, Elliot Smith (RIP), and Joie Calio. And I was not let down by Alexi Murdoch! If you want to hear a voice born of pure talent, exuding sincerity at every turn, get this disc. It is worth every penny.

    I love this CD. I just wish there were more songs on it because I would love to hear more of Alexi Murdoch's music. I'm telling everyone I know to buy this CD. The music is beautiful.

    I love all "4 Songs" and they sound incredible being played in any order (ie. on shuffle mode). This is one of the most honest and intimate recordings that I have ever had the privelege of listening to. "Orange Sky" is definetly a stand-out song which is really heartfelt, as illustrated in the lyrics ("In your love; my salvation lies in your love") His music has been featured on both Dawson's Creek and O.C. (Orange County) and I hope to hear more of his music in the mainstream. This is a must have CD for anyone who can truly appreciate the honesty in music. I can't wait for a full length album.     he is one of the few folksy songwriters that has a feel good mood to it. i like his positivity, and at the same time he is very sentimental. i met him once at a gig he did, he walked up to me and said he recognized me, i told him i just have one of those familiar faces, but it was just cool that he doesn't have a hangup and will approach you and just be friendly. i hope to see him perform more in los angeles. i am going to buy more of his music. theres something sincere about his songs. tis rare! i love "orange sky". i'ts one of those songs you can just play it over and over. alexi rocks yo!

    The only complaint I have against this excellent album is that there are only 4 songs on it. It is however a full body of work with a very completed and filled out feel to it. I would encourage all to purchase it with as much efficiency as you dare. With the mellow sound of Nick Drake with a few delightful Scottish bits thrown in, you find you cannot sleep through this mellow yet soul moving music.

    I love this CD!!! What a find! Alexi's voice is magical. This man obviously has talent and hopefully the rest of the world will notice it too!     I can't put into words the effect this music has on me whenever I hear it. It takes me to a place where I can let my self feel. I feel warmth and wonder. It puts me in a spiritual place where I can imagine my son speaking to me and his brother and sister. Dustin, my son, died 3 years ago in a car accident. He was 20. When I hear these songs, especially Orange Sky, I hear his voice. It gives me some comfort. And hope. I look forward to a full cd. Perhaps this isn't the kind of review you are looking for but what more can you ask from great music but to take you to your deepest soulful self. This does. Wonderful.
