notes
Alexander Sandor’s latest CD is an energetic and polished exploration of primarily Joplin rags, with a few surprises thrown in. While remaining true to the essence of Joplin’s work, Sandor investigates new possibilities inherent in the music. After a brisk jog through Magnetic Rag, one of Joplin’s later compositions, he re-works the ending into a slow, introspective coda using the same material as the original. A particularly striking effect is attained in Scott Joplin’s New Rag, which is transformed into a ragtime concerto complete with a dramatic and fiery solo cadenza. By contrast are such gems as Pleasant Moments (a beautiful, relaxed ragtime waltz) and Bethena – A Concert Waltz, which in Sandor’s hands becomes high drama. Undoubtedly the high point of this disc is a wonderful piece by the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk entitled Union. This tour-de-force presents several well-known patriotic airs in concert fashion, in an enormous range of emotion. It is a thrilling piece that stirs one’s blood. Last on the disc is a quiet but lovely piece called By Smouldering Embers. This CD is an excellent addition to any music fan’s collection.
